Great Location in Santa Monica

TheAdventurers Dec 3, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

This was my first trip to LA and my husband's third (though it was his first for something other than business). We stayed in ... another hotel in Newport Beach for part of the week and then at Double Tree in Santa Monica the second half of the week. Both were great locations. We spent the first part of the week on one beach after another since Newport Beach is further out from the city. Lovely walks and very peaceful. We loved the combination of beaches and being fairly close to city action at Santa Barbara. We went at Thanksgiving so we didn't swim any. The sun was brilliant and we loved just hanging out at the beach-side cafes or walking on the piers. Every restaurant we went to was spectacular. Double Tree was close to the highway so it was easy to get around and back. On the flip side, the highway was a bit noisy early in the morning during traffic time. The hotel is kinda within walking distance of the beach and 3rd St. Promenade shopping and restaurants. It's not close so if you are not willing to walk at least three blocks to get somewhere, then find another hotel. If I was going there to be "on the beach" I wouldn't stay here. It would be cumbersome to lug a bunch of towels and any chairs to the beach without getting into a car and driving there. The hotel suite was roomy and clean. The bed was comfy. Our room was a bit cold and the temperature didn't heat up quickly when we wanted it to. More reason to snuggle so it wasn't a big issue. There is a small fridge. We had some leftovers and I asked for a microwave to heat them up in. They promptly got us one and plates for eating. The only frustrating thing was the parking garage. You have to put a card in to get out and get a ticket for another card when you get back in. Several times the gate machine didn't work so the gate didn't open. Also, the elevator that went down to the parking garage was sooooo slow. On our last day it was "out of order" which didn't surprise us. They have stairs so it wasn't so bad until we needed to get our luggage to the car on leaving. I would recommend this hotel to people going to LA for visiting sights and to see the beach a couple of times. I would not recommend this hotel to someone going to LA for the beach unless they are willing to park a car and pay a lot of money in parking meters.

My review of the Doubletree Hotel

Telling The Truth And Nothing But It Nov 1, 2009

At check in, I did receive the complimentary cookie which like my room and my stay was not good and very stale. I have stayed ... at many hotels traveling on business and this place is nothing special at all. Unique in giving out cookies but I think it is a ploy to keep you from leaving or complaining. I stayed at the room 2nd best from the penthouse suite and paid what I consider to be a not so modest of an amount. Over 300.00 bucks a night for 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom. Very small, but clean. Very quiet, but very misleading. Parking is another issue for the money conscious. $18.00 to self park, and $22.00 to vallet which you might as well I suppose at that rate being so close in cost. I hated my stay and resented the cost knowing that I definitely did not get my moneys worth. Have a nice stay in hell! The staff was kind but very UN- knowledgeable. I asked them about my room and how it looked nothing like it's description and they just said that they were sorry and offered no help or explanation. If I was to be blunt about the staff I would say that they were all a bunch of idiots giving out cookies to keep you from complaining.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

The description said a short walk from the beach. Yet another lie. I can see the ferris wheel from my hotel room but a short walk is riding the white lie a little too far. Take your car for the short DRIVE. When you get back, hope that the hotel doesn't charge you again for parking another 18-22 dollars! Which I don't put past them.

Double Freeway Sound Hotel

Karl the Foodie Oct 19, 2009

Although the hotel is leas than a half mile from the beach and near great restaurants, it's also at the base of the noisy 10 ... freeway and adjacent to Santa Monica High School: can you say marching band practice? It's clearly more appropriate for the business traveler and we were doing a couples getaway. Considering the cost per night including parking and taxes was over $250, we were expecting something of higher quality. The windows looking out at the freeway and the Santa Monica mountains were layered with dirt as was the outside sill. The "Jazz Loft" has no live music and is dismal to say the least. All that being said, the staff and service were excellent, as was the warm chocolate chip walnut cookie we received on arrival.

First Time LA Trip

Anthony Oct 14, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

First off, the people were very nice. I got the two-bed two-room suite. We had 4 people and there was enough seating for us ... to sit comfortably in the living room but not enough room to move around comfortably. The walking space in the bedroom was pretty limited. Basically it seemed alot smaller than what I expected for a suite. Parking was a little pricey at about $20/day.

The hotel staff were really friendly and responsive. We had a plumbing problem that was promptly fixed. The bed was the most ... comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. At check-in I mentioned to the staff that I had stayed in this same hotel 13 years earlier and recalled being serenaded by the Santa Monica High School marching band- they kindly put us in a room not facing the high school playing field, but I still heard it on Friday morning. The location was great for the wedding we came to LA to attend. Most of the meals and party were in Marina Del Rey, which was close by. Santa Monica had great little places to eat and shop, especially on Montana Avenue.

Good value, nothing to get excited about

Mark L Sep 27, 2009

We were in town for a wedding and stayed here on recommendation from the couple. The room was very large, although fairly ... dated, and things were fairly nice (except for the views, which are basically of a freeway or a bus yard), your choice! Overall a good value and we were satisfied, but certainly isn't going to make an impression.

The hotel's service was friendly and efficient -- what you'd expect from the Hilton-owned chain. Self-parking in the ... basement garage is $18/day (summer 2009) with in/out privileges. We had a car, so we appreciated the hotel's proximity to the 10 Freeway. Those without cars would find plenty to do within walking distance of the hotel (see note below).

Overpriced, but convenient to the beach

DrKete Jun 7, 2009

The room was tiny, way too expensive for what you got, the tv only had state-run media channels ( no FOX News), they made it ... too easy to inadvertently do pay-per-view, parking costs were exorbitant, the cookies were nice, bad arrangement for coffee maker, shower was not very good, it was mostly clean and I felt safe walking at night. I was left feeling ripped-off. For the price, I was expecting a much nicer facility.

The hotel staff was always nice and helpful no matter the time of the day. I wanted more tea and they brought it right ... away. I would say that the only negative thing to say about this hotel is that the hotel restarant was not good. it was over priced and the food was not worth it. Not a good value for the money. We had to wait about 5 minutes before anyone even came to seat us the one time we ate there and we were the only people there. $ 20 for a hanburger is not a good value when you could have gone to McDonals and gotten a better tasting one cheeper - not saying much for the chef.

There is a little place that is called MIchale D's cafe and Caterer. It is attached to the bowling alley. The service was good and the food was great and the price was just as good. We went there for breakfast several times. Portions are large so you need to be hungry. The is also a little donut shop that is a short drive of a couple blocks from the hotel - Donut King. It also serves breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. Good food and not too pricey. They are also realy nice there and friendly.

The hotel was very clean, the maid would come and clean the room daily, making the bed, replacing towels with clean ones, ... putting more coffee in the machine, general cleaning etc. The staff were very helpful and friendly, always on hand to help- Willingly which is a bonus! Location was perfect- 5min walk to beach- safe area, 3min walk to shopping area. Lots of public transport which is safe and runs regularly. Not too far from Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and other attraction like Disney and Universal Studios- we were able to get so much done in 5 days. Price was very reasonable from CheapTickets.com. Hotel have link with tour guides which will take you to the places mentioned above plus many more. Overall a very nice place, i would stay there again, not only with friends but family too! We enjoyed a 5 night stay, lovely room overlooking the pool, only problem as it was a suite thought a refrigerator would have ... been included

Hotel was very clean, staff was friendly and helpful, and you can't beat warm cookies when you check in. I am looking to ... stay at Doubletree Hotels when I travel now.

Close to the Promenade and Beach

Steven Sep 2, 2008

Would recommend to a friend!

The Santa Monica Doubletree is located within a 7 minute walk to the promenade, and about the same to the beach. The ... immediate block or two is not so nice, but the proximity to the beach, promenade, and I-10 make it worth it. The parking fee (not included) is a little steep, but the gym, pool and jacuzzi are nice and the rooms excellent.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

3rd Street Promenade is an easy walk from this hotel. Shopping and several restaurants can be found there. The Santa Monica Pier and beach are also within walking distance, but not an easy one.

Dining tip, Long Walk

Go to La Botte for great Italian food.

--Karl the Foodie, Santa Monica, CA Oct 19, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Walk

The Promenade is 3-4 blocks away and it has many retail outlets and restaurants.

--Anthony, Monmouth County, NJ Oct 14, 2009

Entertainment tip, Short Walk

For those "Friends of Bill W" visiting Santa Monica, there are a lot of really good meetings to be found within walking distance of the hotel.

Entertainment tip, Short Walk

walk to pier and promenade

--Virginia traveler, Virginia Aug 17, 2009

Nightlife tip, Short Walk

Don't miss the Third Street Promenade, just a few quick blocks away: dining, shopping, movies, street entertainment (ranging from preacher rants complete with a/v to guitar music to skateboard-riding dogs) and world-class people-watching.

--AnchorageKC, Anchorage, AK Jun 8, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Walk

It is a few blocks walk to the 3rd St Promenade and a lot of shopping and dining choices. Also, a nice walk to various small theater venues and the beach.

Dining tip, Short Walk

There is a little place that is called MIchale D's cafe and Caterer. It is attached to the bowling alley. The service was good and the food was great and the price was just as good. We went there for breakfast several times. Portions are large so you need to be hungry. The is also a little donut shop that is a short drive of a couple blocks from the hotel - Donut King. It also serves breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. Good food and not too pricey. They are also realy nice there and friendly.
