Prompt check in, although front staff was not overly welcoming. I travel a great deal and would rate them as average (not ... rude, but could maybe smile and pretend to be happy). The concierge was helpful and arranged for special requests-outstanding. I think his name was [...]. Support staff (maids and bellman) were pleasant and helpful. Restaurant experience- food good, but server was below average. He took forever to take order, bring the order and made incorrect change. I thought twice about leaving a tip. Also, it is a non smoking hotel, but smelled smoke in the hallway and in my room. Not sure why staff did not enforce the policy.

If you are new to the city, take the Grey Line Tour. Two day pass is the best option and can allow you to travel all over the city. If you aren't a subway or taxi person, it is easy to wait at a stop for a tour bus, simply hop on and hop off when you are in the neighborhood you want. Sure you have to ride the travel route but it saves the taxi fare and you can ride unlimited for two days (plus Empire state building entrance and liberty/ellis island tickets).

Great Location
Koolmama44 Oct 13, 2009
We were in NYC to celebrate our son's 1st wedding anniversary with them. The hotel was beautiful and very quiet. It was ... extremely clean and we were close enough to walk to most everything. I know from reading previous comments, a lot of people thot the rooms were small. I was prepared for the worst but felt our room was more than sufficient. The beds are comfy and the bath was very nice! The only problem I had was the fact that we had booked our rooms 6 months ahead of time and requested that our son and his wife have a king bed due to medical reasons. When we arrived at 9AM, the desk clerk told us there were no kings and that they were already spoken for. I had called the front desk of the hotel 3 times in the last month to verify that they would get a king bed and was assured it would not be a problem. I was disappointed for my son. They did not sleep as well as we did. However, we were surprised that we got to check in immediately when we got there at 9AM and did not have to store our luggage for the day. There were several little cafes close to the front door. We ate our breakfast at Tasty's just north of the hotel on Madison. Shopping was close as well as all the major attractions. We felt very safe here. Since none of us had been to NYC before, we took the 48 hour Grey Line bus and did 2 of the 3 loops. It was fantastic...the guides were very knowledgable and fun. It was an idea way to get a feel for the city and find the areas we wanted to visit more extensively. The hotel has a nice business center where I could print our boarding passes for our return flight and they also held our luggage until we left for the airport in the late afternoon at no cost. I would say the only down side to the Carlton is the staff is less than friendly. The fact that we are from the mid-west may explain the fact that we thot they could be more friendly but it may just be their demeanor. It was not a problem for us though. I would love to go back and stay here again and spend more time in SoHo, Grand Central, and see another show. It was a fantastic 3 day weekend and our son/wife really had a great time also.

We spent the weekend exploring the city. [...] the concierge was extremely helpful with information about the city and how ... to get to where we wanted to go. The location of the hotel is great and just a short train ride over to wherever you need to go!The hotel has great character and charm. The rooms were slightly smaller than what we expected, but the right size for NYC, so it worked out well and suited out needs perfectly.

Traveler Aug 11, 2009
Great location to reach all the sights of NYC, Empire State Building only 6 blocks and nearest subway line only 1 block away. ... The central location made it easy to get around the city to various sights and was able to sleep easily at night away from the main crowded night streets. If traveling with kids, Madison Square Park is two blocks away with a playground (even water play zone.) The hotel staff was attentive and very helpful whether getting ice delivered to our room or recommending a restaurant for dinner, even securing tickets for a broadway show. If you are looking for a fast paced place to stay, try times square otherwise you can't go wrong staying in this area.

Excellent Stay in New York City
Puntoman Aug 7, 2009
This is a superb hotel in a great midtown location. The temperature outside was in the high 80's but the air condition inside ... kept it nice and cool. The room which was a standard room was large for a couple and had a 42" flat screen TV, a desk with a wonderfully comfortable chair. The bathroom was excellent complete with the Molton and Brown products and we had an excellent 4 nights sleep in the bed. I can't recommend this hotel enough!

We spent little time in the hotel, however the staff were very helpful very courteous, but our experience with Continental ... airlines on our return home was not very pleasant, we placed on standby, as they overbooked by 10% we were told. When we purchased our tickets, nowhere on the receipt did it indicated that we were on standby, this caused us undue stress as we required to be home that evening..

Robert Aug 2, 2009
The hotel was beautifully appointed with a lovely lobby and beautiful rooms. The bedding was high quality and the marble ... bathrooms were done very well. The service was impeccible and I will definately be back to this hotel. I stay regularly in the city on business and I would put this hotel up against hotels that cost twice as much. I had room service one night and the food was excellent and arrived quicker than typical room service at hotels. The staff was first class from the front desk to the maids.

Beware of Un-Renovated Rooms
Texan at Heart Jul 25, 2009
If you're looking for a place to relax for a weekend in NYC, do not choose this hotel. This hotel has false advertising on ... its website. It claims to have all newly renovated rooms that all have brand new 42-inch flat screen tvs and other new amenities. We upgraded to the superior room to have a little more space. However, our room looked nothing like the picture of the superior room on the website. It had all older, worn furniture, including a broken drawer. We also ended up with an old, 20-inch tube tv. When we called the front desk to inquire about our older amenities, the gentleman at the front desk said they never advertised having flat screen tvs in any of their rooms. We called the front desk again 2 days later, and we were informed we were placed on one of the 2 un-renovated floors in the hotel. If you prefer not to be lied to by hotel staff, then DO NOT stay at this hotel. Spend your money at a hotel that has better customer service.

Lovely Mother-Daughter Trip
Cyndi Jul 21, 2009
My Mom & I checked in very late and found that we didn't have the room I'd booked -- the front desk immediately upgraded us ... at no additional charge. We did have to ask for additional soap, wash cloths weren't replaced one day -- but staff brought the items to us immediately. It was a restful, lovely place to stay at the end of our busy days and the architecture that is retained in the hotel is lovely. The only real negative was poor guidance from the concierge in the form of a map that he inaccurately marked. The plus side was that we spent 2 1/2 hours on a sunny morning walking through Central Park to get to the correct location...

Mermade Jul 15, 2009
After I walked past the hotel twice ... no sign at street level to advertise the hotel, I found it! The lobby is ... breathtaking. This obviously old building has taken very well to its renovation. It is stunning. The front desk was very friendly and professional. My room was lovely, (kudos to the interior designer), a peaceful, tastefully designed sanctuary, and exceptionally clean and sparkling (a must in my book). It was so quiet, I was amazed. I would definitely return and recommend the hotel. A drawback to some may be the location, but I liked it because it was removed from the hectic crowded streets, but certainly within easy walking distance of Penn Station, Empire State Building, shopping, etc. etc. etc.

It is located in a very good place to see the Empire State Building, and Flat Iron buildings. It's also only a few blocks from the green and yellow lines of the subway, which will take you anywhere you need to be in Manhattan. There are also several value eateries located within quick walking distance from this hotel. Breakfasts can range between $5 - $15 for two if you look.
