This Hotel was way over priced and over rated. It's far away from most attractions. Cab to San Juan about $75 each way, from ... Airport $75 each way (for 2 people). Staff not friendly. Do not book excursions thru hotel, way over priced, most would be half of what hotel charges. Definately need car to get anywhere, traveling by taxi is expensive. Food sucked and way over priced. Drinks expensive. Not impressed at all considering this was supposed to be 4/5 star hotel. My experience overall was terrible, best service I got was from AVIS at hotel, I rented a car from the hotel thru AVIS. AVIS was great, very helpful. Hotel staff not!! You can find better places for a lot less money and much better location. Research hotels in Puerto Rico more carefully, I booked this last minute and regret not researching more. I would never stay here again nor would I stay with Wyndham again after this. Wyndham should be ashamed of themselves for hotel!

Rio Mar was too busy to care
Winter getaway Jan 11, 2010
Avoid this hotel during the peak holiday season (Christmas and New Year's) because the staff will tell you that all of your ... concerns are due to the hotel being booked. The rooms were grungy, heating was not available (and was desired during the two days of rain), and very few vegetarian meal options are offered at their many eateries.

Beautiful lobby...rooms not so much
Diana Jan 11, 2010
My expectations were really high with this hotel and unfortunately I was disappointed. The first thing I noticed was the lack ... of cleanliness on the hallways leading to my room. There are not vending machines, our first night we got there at midnight and everything was closed. If you wanted to drink something it would either room service or room service, which is very expensive. The toilet did not work right as well as the remote control. We advised the front desk but they did not fix them. Also, we paid extra for ocean view...we were given a room at the bottom, all the view was obstructed. On the good side, the lobby and the pool were nice and pretty.

A Wonderful Time in Puerto Rico
taco Jan 9, 2010
We had a wonderful stay at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. The service was exceptional, the grounds were beautiful, and the ... amenities were just what we had expected. The food, though not inexpensive, was delicious - especially at their Italian restaurant, Palio's. We enjoyed the beautiful beach, as well as the adult-only pool. They seemed to also provide a nice array of activities for the kids. We can't say enough about the staff! It was a complete pleasure to interact with the men and women who are employed there. One of the beach food servers even came back to us to correct a billing error - we had been overcharged $00.56!! We are looking forward to returning to the Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa!!

Nuyorican Dec 25, 2009
We really liked this place, the staff is AMAZING. The food and drinks are really good but EXPENSIVE. Rent a car at the ... airport and make a stop at the supermarket for your own liquor and snacks if you want to save $$ while on the beach or poolside. This place could REALLY USE a DJ at night, there is NO nightlife here and you can get really bored at night. You have to travel to San Juan for nightclubs etc. Overall, we were very pleased and plan to return in the new year, only this time better prepared.

We enjoyed our stay however there was one very grouchy female front desk manager and the lobby bar area was extremely ... cold!...like 60 degrees! We also had ants in our room however the hotel took care of them immediately with no reoccurrance. We would go back even though the location is somewhat isolated and their transportation charge from the airport is outrageous...$75 for two ONE WAY!

Useful review
Karina Nov 30, 2009
Experience and hotel: in general we liked our stay, we were not bored. Hotel has few restaurants; few pools; casino; small ... store with clothes, drinks and sweets; small store with swimming accessories; indoor and outdoor bar, golf, tennis, nice garden in front of the hotel; access to the beach + a lot of territory. Everything is done in a nice design. However, there is nowhere to go around the hotel; the closest place would be the city of San Juan. Rooms: "Ocean View" type room means you will get a little of ocean view. If you want most of your view to be the ocean, you need to get "Ocean Front" type room. We were able to upgrade "Ocean view" to "Ocean Front" for $25 per day. In general rooms were clean and handy. Beach: hotel has an access to public beach with yellow sand, no lifeguard. I did not see any other people beside from the hotel there. Hotel provides free umbrellas and beach-chairs. The beach and water is moderately clean. Service was very nice and helpful. We noticed that in general many people in Puerto Rico are sincere and eager to help. Prices: prices for food in restaurants and for taxi seemed a little high. Breakfast for 2 with coffee, orange juice + 2 omelets is $50. Taxi from hotel to San Juan - $80. Excursion for half-day to Rain Forest park - $60; snorkeling + trip to Culebra island - $150.

Don't pay the 50 to 90 dollar fee signing up for a tour of El Yunque. It is a 10 minute drive from the Rio Mar and it costs $3 to get in and you can drive yourself up and down the mountain at your own pace. There are many sightseers to point you in the right direction if necessary. Also you can find souveniers cheaper at the shops outside of the resorts.
--Anita, Connecticut Nov 16, 2009
I would recommend hiking in the El Yunque Rain Forest. The forest is managed by the U.S. Depart of Natural Resources and the hiking is breath taking. Rent a car. We drove around the entire island and visited many resorts. Rio Grande is one of the top resorts by far! Take the ferry for $3.00 to Cuelbra Island. The beach is beautiful! Travel to the center of the island and go to Toro Negron Forest. Beautiful and you can hike to the highest elevation.
--One who loves to travel, Wisconsin Nov 14, 2009
The rainforest is a short drive from the resort. If you have a car its free ($3 per person if you go to the welcoming center which is not required), but the hotel charges you $50 to go. They overcharged for transportation anywhere you go.
