We had a great time. Went swimming in both pool and beach. Very serene setting with waves crashing on the beach at night. ... Casino was very small and restaurant was over priced but overall a very nice vacation was had by all. Do rent a car if you want to go sight seeing. Parking at hotel is $15/day for hotel guests but well worth it considering the prices of taxi rides and shuttle services. Hotel is very nice with very courteous staff. The only negative with the room was that the floor was always dirty so we had to wear flipflops to avoid getting the bottom of our feet dirty.

Don't pay the 50 to 90 dollar fee signing up for a tour of El Yunque. It is a 10 minute drive from the Rio Mar and it costs $3 to get in and you can drive yourself up and down the mountain at your own pace. There are many sightseers to point you in the right direction if necessary. Also you can find souveniers cheaper at the shops outside of the resorts.

I would recommend hiking in the El Yunque Rain Forest. The forest is managed by the U.S. Depart of Natural Resources and the hiking is breath taking. Rent a car. We drove around the entire island and visited many resorts. Rio Grande is one of the top resorts by far! Take the ferry for $3.00 to Cuelbra Island. The beach is beautiful! Travel to the center of the island and go to Toro Negron Forest. Beautiful and you can hike to the highest elevation.

The rainforest is a short drive from the resort. If you have a car its free ($3 per person if you go to the welcoming center which is not required), but the hotel charges you $50 to go. They overcharged for transportation anywhere you go.

Beautiful grounds and great staff
One who loves to travel Nov 14, 2009
The RioMar is located in Rio Grande, which is a wonderful town. Plenty of restaurants and next to the beautiful El Yunque ... Rain Forest. The staff was wonderful, polite, accomodating. The food at the resort was expensive. We traveled to local restaurants and their are free shuttles from the resort to Richie's, Hacienda Garibaldi. I would recommend eating off the resort because the food from the locals are wonderful! The beach is long, dark brown sand, clean, Atlantic side. Water is clear and warm.

The entire hotel was booked so we were upgraded to the ocean villas! The villas were amazing with a private pool and a ... private beach. Heard many complaints from those staying at the main resort about their rooms but did not witness any of them. My review is for the villas no the main resort. Things are over priced and you are stuck at the resort if you dont have a car.

It is out of the wasy but quiet and very pretty location. Needs some cleaning - hall carpet, pool, hot tub. Staff was VERY ... nice. Don't pay their BIG fees for excursions. Rent a car (pay $15 per day to park) & venture out on your own. We took the Eastwind (out of Fajardo - this company is great) high speed boat to Viequez Island for the night tour of Mosquito Bay. The bioluminescent dinoflagellates display was awesome - be sure to get off the boat & swim.

Great Resort for Beach, Beach Beach! Restaurants at hotel, and locally, are underwhelming. However, San Juan is 40 minutes ... away by car. Rent a car and bring a GPS if you have one. Best Meal: in Old San Juan - the Parrot Club and Aguaviva. Best Activity - other than Beach - El Yunque and sunset walk on the Paseo de la Princesa overlooking San Juan harbor to El Morro castle. Great weather - even in the heart of hurricane season - but hot! hot! hot!

coolsaul01 Jul 26, 2009
I have stayed in this property once before coming here with my family. The hotel is beautiful and the pools are excellent ... with amazing settings and activities for the whole family. The beach is adjacent to the pools and is just breathtaking. Breakfast buffet was a little over priced for what they were offering. I missed hot side dishes like hash browns. The coffee was not your typical puerto rican brewed coffee, which is a shame! Also enjoyed the casino and its live music and free drinks on Saturday night.

I attended a conference while in Puerto Rico. More time would have made my stay more enjoyable. However, when I arrived I ... learned that [...] had reserved me a room when the resort had sold out. The Rio Mar staff worked excellently in accomodating me. All worked out fine in any event. Fine eateries are all located within the etablishment. However pricey, but the food is good. There is a 18% gratutity included with all resort service. I was okay though. The service was fair...

Check in was seamless, staff was very nice. Restaurants are nice, but expensive (too expensive for the meal you're getting). ... pool area was well taken care of. However, housekeeping was not the best at the room. Also, Wyndham is promoting vacation clubs so if you're not interested make sure to watch out for those employees that will do anything to try and take you to their "special meeting".

You can save some big $$$ on food by having a fridge sent to your room (Wyndham does not promote mini bars in rooms) for $50.00 the entire stay and buying snacks and sandwich meats to make in room.

the hotel is very nice but in a remote location so unless you rent a car or take a taxi (expensive!) you are pretty much ... confined to the hotel. the restaurants offer a nice variety of lunch and dinner choices. the ocean is only steps from the resort which is a major plus. the biggest drawback was the staff. They were not friendly! We went during the off season so not sure if that had anything to do with it or if that is how it always is at this resort. I stayed in San Juan a few years ago and do not recall such unfriendly treatment.

Long Golfing Weekend
Active Traveler May 3, 2009
We took this trip for the golf and the courses would have been great but the greens were a mess. The golf center offered us ... discounted rates to make up for it and we made the best of it. The hotel is nice and food was decent. However there wasn't a lot of variety and it was very expensive. There was absolutely no nightlife so if you are looking for evening entertainment this is not the place to go. The rooms were clean and the staff was nice. The pools and beach were great. All in all not bad for a golf weekend away.

Short drive or long walk (~1 mile w/ hills) - Buy ALL alcohol, snacks, soda/mixers, water ... etc. from the local market(s). You can probably save yourself $500-$1000, depending on the length of your stay. Normally, I don't mind spending a little extra for convenience, but there is a decent amount of money that can be saved... perhaps, if it was an "all-inclusive" resort it may be better.

That is it...NOTHING ELSE. Everything else is at least 30 mins to 45 mins away. And it is NOT ethnic...there is one local place at the end of the hill headed towards the resort that is very good. But you need a car or the cab will cost you $25 one way..just to get you off the property. The drive is only 7 minutes if that!
