Very friendly staff - listens to your gripes but nothing done. No where in any advertisement did hotel mention that they were ... undergoing major renovations. No where did they mention that only hangers were being given for clothing and that there would be NO place to store clothing. Guests must live out of suitcases. Hotel had nice sign about buffet breakfast and an area set aside for it, but they never served it.

nice view , reasonable price

Professor Carl Nov 9, 2009

It's important to remember that one doesn't go to Hawaii to spend large amounts of time in a hotel room. The Nani Loa in ... its new addition offers bright, clean, tiled rooms with views of the bay . A nice sight to wake up to. Having lived in Hawaii before, I was not surprised by the politeness of the staff, the willingness to be of service, or the absence of the "carnival" Hawaii stereotypes. I wished for a computer with a printer so thatI could print out my boarding passes, but the airport with machinery for it is only minutes away.( You can do such errands there and still get out of the parking lot within the "free time" the lot allows. The room was strange only in that it had no bugs, (an inevitable accompaniment to tropical life). It reminded me in design with its blond wood, built in accommodations, its tiled floors, of some of the best rooms in Italian hotels. The catch is, I believe, that you should probably ask for a room in the newer part of the hotel. Hawaiian aloha is a real thing. Relax and meet it with a smile; service will improve greatly in response.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Long Walk

One of the most pleasant ways to do your fitness walks is to follow the model of the locals and enjoy your fitness walk along the paths in the large Liliuiokalani Park that is bordered by Hilo Bay. A fine way to start the day. It is open with many side ways to amuse, places to pause and things to admire. Locals advise that walking alone at night in that area is not a totally safe exercise. So what else is new in Tourist land?

Hawaiin flair for first timers

New Hawaii Lover Nov 8, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

My first trip ever to the Big Island landed me here. The view from my room was good, while the view from the balcony across ... the hall was superb, picturesque view of Mauna Kea. On a clear day you can actually see the Keck observatories! Wonderful. Hotel staff was very friendly and accomodating. The second day in I was returning with a group of friends from the Volcanos National Park when I realized my hotel key was 45 mins the other way in my soon to be married friend's car. Luckily I had an extra key in the room. The gentleman at the front desk understood my problem and had no issue getting my room opened up for me! The rooms themselves had a distinct but not overwhelming Hawaiian flair. In comparison another hotel my friend stayed at on the same Banyan road strip looked like it could've been anywhere on the mainland. Only minor gripe was the pool which looked under construction, but who goes to Hawaii to jump in a hotel pool! Beaches close by!

Naniloa Volcanoes Resort

TikiGeorge Oct 26, 2009

Hilo is an excellent base of operations to explore the Big Island. Unfortunately, my stay at Naniloa Resorts left much to be ... desired. The hotel is undergoing major renovations that leave it looking like it needs to be condemned. They were also working on the water system at the time of my visit that left my room with no running water or flushable toilets for over nine hours each day over the course of three days. The hotel only had a small "Please note that we will be working on the water system..." sign that in no way hinted at the inconvenience. I cannot believe Orbitz listed this place as one of their choices, because it only reflects badly on them as well. I will not use Orbitz again.

Feedback

Traveler Oct 23, 2009

First approaching the hotel made it appear that the hotel was not open (major construction going on in the front of the ... hotel), external appearance was run down, dirty, "tired" looking, no directions from the parking lot to alternate entry to the hotel/front desk, abandoned and empty shops, hot and airless lobby. Room was beautiful, had obviously been recently renovated, comfortable and pleasant. However, construction caused water to be turned off from 8 to 5:30 p.m. --water did not get turned on until after 6:00 p.m.--major inconvenience for guests getting ready for dinner or just returning from work (no water or bathroom facilities available for use), hotel under major renovation but no apology, no discounted room rate for tired looking halls, unimproved hallways, intermittent lighting in the hallways, elevators that smelled moldy, use of elevators by housekeeping staff and guests, elevator lights and buttons didn't sync to the correct floor, etc.

Three days at Naniloa Volcanoes Resort

My experience with this hotel was actually great. For only 150$ per person we got three nights plus a car over [...]. Reading ... other reviews and taking into account the price, I was prepared for something unpleasant - but, it was quite the opposite: hotel was perfectly normal, rooms are actually very nice, we had a good view on the ocean, spatious bathrooms, big parking lot - really, for 150 bucks, a really good offer.

First, I go to Hilo to relax, no hubbub, no tourist gimmicks etc. I have stayed at the Naniloa in the past. We had a great ... ocean view room (9th floor) that invites you to sit, relax and watch Hilo Bay. We use the hotel for a base and visited the volcano, Tsunami museum, Botanical Gardens, and the Imaloa astronomy center. It was my wife's first visit to the Islands and she loved it.

Chuck Sep 21, 2009

The first room I was given had an A/C unit that was so loud that it was not possible to get a good nights sleep. I had to ... set the temp to 80 degrees to get some sleep. When I did wake at 4:30AM I saw roaches run across the night stand. I requested and received to different room, which was a significent improvement. The pool and grounds of this hotel have not been kept up and are in need of improvement. The overall appearance of this hotel is run-down.

Ok so the place is under renovation- and believe me it needs it- but my room was very clean and nice with a breathtaking ... view. On weekends there is a breakfast in the lobby which is nice. I found the place strangly homey and really it kinda of grew on me over the week. If they get the pool redone and hopefully expanded along with lots of obviously needed upgrades this place will rock! Very pleasant hotel

Future Angel Sep 12, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The remodeled room was very nice. I loved the decor. It was simple, but extremely tasteful. An original art painting was ... in the room and the walls on every floor, near the elevators, were painted with beautiful flower designs--- very lovely. The hotel continues to be remodeled and my hat is off to them for being able to continue in this recession. If I visit Hilo again I will definitely stay at this hotel. I am glad that I did not let the poor reviews deter me. When I read that the rooms were being remodeled, I felt that the hotel would be fine, and I was correct.

Money savers tip

I had to cancel part of my stay because my wife was sick (the vacation part - that was to start after my two days of work). [...]

Dining tip, Short Drive

Must check out Ken's House of Pancakes!

Money savers tip, Short Drive

Less than two miles from the hotel is Cafe 100, home of the original Moco Loco and it only costs $1.39 plus tax. Awesome!

Dining tip, Short Drive

We had dinner at "Seaside" about 3 miles out of town. Great place, good food reasonably priced many "locals" eat there.

Recreation/Attractions tip, In Hotel

Attend to the grounds and especailly pool area, both would be improved just by performing routine maintenance. Clean or replace carpeting. Paint the exterior.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

The best I did was to slow down and really see the areas around Hilo- some of the sites are literally breathtaking. I took a day and just drove north and stopped everywhere- best idea ever

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

The Hawaiian Botanical Gardens is amazing--so beautiful. It's $15, but worth it. You stroll along paths surrounded by exotic flowers from all over and tropical trees of all kinds, with little waterfalls and a stream that you can follow down to the sea. After, be sure to stop at What's Shakin' for a delicious smoothie. They also serve healthy lunches--it's on your left as you leave the Botanical Gardens, just before the end of the 4-mile scenic detour. Yummy!

Dining tip, Short Drive

For excellent Mexican food and fun atmosphere, try Ruben's on Kam Hwy. downtown.(Desk Staff recommendation). And take advantage of the the island's free bus service, covers the whole island!

Hilo Bay Cafe is a must. Ken's Pancake House was also a surprise. We used the book "Ultimate Big Island" travel book series...very true and a must have.

Shopping tip, Short Drive

Stock up your little fridge by shopping at Wal-Mart right up the road. The food court there is not bad also.

Recreation/Attractions tip

I live in Honolulu and i visit Hilo often so i know the town well. However, to a traveler from the mainland i would advise not to expect Hilo to be a big party city but a quiet mellow town. The biggest tourist site would be the volcano eruptions, which is beautiful and worth seeing as well. Hilo is just 1 town and on only 1 side of the Bid Island.

--Mucker, Honolulu Aug 3, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

Close to Volcanoes but still in Hilo. Also, pretty close to Airport.

--Single Dad, San Dimas, CA Jul 31, 2009

--traveling mom, Syracuse, NY Jul 23, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

Easy access to Volcanos National Park and Hamakua coast.

--Texan-on-the-Bayou, Marrero, LA Jul 22, 2009

Dining tip, Short Drive

Lots of good restaurant choices nearby but don't plan on late evening dinners - Hilo goes to sleep early.

--Travelling Dad, Honolulu, HI Jul 17, 2009

Dining tip, Short Drive

Go to eat any meal you want at Ken's Pancake house which is open 24/7. It is a local coffee shop/restaurant near the main intersection of Kanoelehua and Kamehameha Roads. The price and variety can't be beat and if the locals eat there, you should too!

--Local gal on Holoholo, Mililani, Hawaii Jul 13, 2009

Dining tip, Short Walk

Prime rib dinner at Hilo Seaside is reasonable and very good. For Japanese food, Restaurant Nihon is close by and also very good.
