The Berkeley Hotel was opened in 1988, but the attention to detail and era leads most visitors to believe that it is much older. Upon selecting the site for a new boutique-style hotel in the historic Shockoe Slip, careful planning and consideration went into the construction of The Berkeley Hotel. Since the site is in a historic district of Richmond, the hotel was designed to be architecturally similar to the buildings surrounding it.
Within just months after opening, The Berkeley Hotel achieved the AAA four-diamond rating and has held this honor every year since. Over the years, The Berkeley Hotel and The Dining Room have achieved countless awards and honors
The Berkeley Hotel's uncompromising service and elegant surroundings capture the essence of the tradition of its namesakes, England's Berkeley Castle and Virginia's Berkeley Plantation. The Berkeley Hotel stands at the crossroads of Richmond's business district and Historic Shockoe Slip. The Berkeley Hotel's ambiance exudes serenity and warmth. Dark wood paneling in the boutique lobby and its adjacent dining room boasts a European flair where dramatic windows push to the ceiling, offering diners a view of the Slip's cobblestone and lamplights. Fifty-five elegantly appointed guest rooms display stylish decor and traditional furnishings from which scenes of revitalized Shockoe Slip may be enjoyed with its beautifully restored tobacco warehouses put to use as stylish new condominiums, restaurants and boutiques. The Berkeley Hotel offers uncompromising AAA Four Diamond service including complimentary morning newspaper, high-speed wireless internet service, health club privileges at the YMCA, cable television, in-room coffee makers, nightly turndown service, in-room dining, and same day laundry and dry-cleaning services. The Berkeley Hotel itself is reminiscent of that time, more than one hundred years ago, when Shockoe Slip was the center of commerce and politics.

we went around seven at night and valet took our car promply and helped with the bags. we got checked in with no problems. ... asked where there is a good place to eat and they told us of several places nearby, and stated that they also have dinner. the next morning went out to eat because cont. breakfast cost $10. so we went to a cafe that was great just around the corner. then the check out was fast and valet was great as well.

Give the parking attendant plenty of time to retrieve car. Couldnt find any other parking except valet.

Not as good as 1st time, but still great
Hotel Lover Aug 17, 2009
When we went the 1st time, it was WONDERFUL. Check-in was fast, staff were friendly, and we got an upgrade without asking! We ... ate in the dining room and it was delicious! The 2nd time was as good, but this time, housekeeping wasn't as great. They didn't remake our beds completely, which was a little of a surprise. Oh well. But this hotel is GREAT. Worth the price!

Great Hotel in Shockoe Slip
Wedding guests for the weekend Aug 9, 2009
The staff and rooms were wonderful. We were warned about the "bar crowd" noise that we would experience when the local bars ... closed and given a chance to change rooms before we even checked in (we declined and didn't suffer too much from it). The breakfasts were delicious - every effort was made to make sure we were satisfied. I highly recommend this hotel to any traveler.

I loved this hotel. Upon arriving I was offered an upgrade to a larger room, and the desk clerk asked if I wished to have a ... suggestion for dinner. He asked about my preferences and provided an excellent suggestion based on my input. Later in the evening I was asked if I would like a wake up call. The room was spotless and had everything I needed. Loved the cozy atmosphere and the sense of being well taken care of!

Just a lovely hotel
Danny Jan 9, 2008
The Berkley Hotel in Richmond is a small, beautiful hotel in the Shockoe Slip area. We stayed one night there in order to ... attend two meetings at the capital. Although the room was small, it was lovely. Soft, classical music was playing when we entered the room. The bed was divine as well as the home-make chocolates left for us. The bath was very nice. And it was totally quiet. the layout of the hotel has only a few rooms clustered together, so we experienced no noise from either the hall or other rooms. The staff (bellhop, front desk) were open and friendly. All in all, I would definately stay here again when in Richmond.

Right across the street from The Berkley is the Tobacco Company restuarant. Interesting atmosphere and delicious food.
