Flights and rental car delays had us arriving about 11pm, the hotel was easy to find but was utterly disappointed at the ... location, and it was too late to change it! Lobby smelled of cigarettes and urine, the room was on the second floor, no elevator, and the sliding door to the street would not lock! About 0230 when the bars closed the room next door engaged in a very loud arrival and what seemed to be rowdy card game with additional drinking. What to do at this point?! Hope they pass out was the only option as I could not change rooms at this point. Also left a personal item in the bathroom, called about 45 minutes after we left and had to argue with the front desk to see if they could retrieve it and stick it into the mail. Shocker they did not want to even look and then claimed it was not there... what a fine establishment. Location does not make up for the poor quality of service and state of the rooms. Would be fine for a Tijuana sleepover but shocking for US standards.

Great value in a nice location
GeeBee Oct 6, 2009
I stayed in Alameda while visiting my son in Oakland. He suggested the hotel because I was traveling alone without a car. ... He felt it was in a good safe location and he was right. The staff was wonderfully accomodating, offering to upgrade me to a suite at no charge, and making sure that I was in a quiet area. The suite was large enough for a family of four with a full kitchen, lots of closet room and a bedroom. There is a sleeper couch in the living room and a dining room table for four. The furniture is plain and there is plenty of lighting. The entire suite was very clean except for a couple of stains on the carpet. It was convenient to have the refrigerator, and if I were traveling with my family, it would be nice to prepare meals there. Convenient shopping across the street -- Trader Joes, Panera, Safeway, Walgreens, several clothing and linens stores and a few places to eat. I didn't use the outdoor pool as it was October, but the pool area was beautiful. The breakfast included rolls and bagels, yogurt, juice, milk and coffee. There may have been cereal, too. The only thing missing was basic kitchen supplies. It would have been nice to have a set of silverware, a couple plates and bowls and paper towel. If I had stayed longer I would have purchased them myself.

Disatisfied
Traveler from Southern Cali Sep 15, 2009
Upon check in, the room I received was not clean, it smelled funny, the T.V was not working and the stove was dirty. When I ... spoke to the front desk clerk about how unsatisfied I was with the room, she said she would call me back within 15 minutes about another room...and I never received a call. I had to call back 2 more times about getting a different room, and was hung up on by the clerk and had to personally go to the front desk to resolve this issue. I felt like I was being watched constantly after my room was changed. Also, it states on the website that there is free Wi-Fi, but I could not get a connection. I did not want to call the front desk again because I didn't want to get hung up on again. I have had a better experience at a Motel 6 than I did here.

Thin walls, timid clerk
Frequent road traveler Sep 7, 2009
Generally the hotel was average but the price was right (cheap for the area). However, the night clerk was way too ... permissive about noise in the adjoining room (separated only by a thin wall and a door). It being a Sunday I had gone to bed around 10:30. Around 11:15 the two ladies next door brought to their room a couple of gentlemen friends and they all proceeded to have a grand old party--lots of high pitched giggling, deep laughter, continuous movement of chairs and stomping of the floor, waking me up. I called the desk clerk at 11:30. He said he had noticed the disturbance and would "watch" them. It became slightly quieter for a while but soon began to build again in volume. At 12:05 when they began to sing, "If you're going to San Francisco . . . ", I'd had enough, called down again and told him to get them out or move them to a remote room. The clerk explained, "We do everything in steps here, sir. I asked them to close the patio door and they did. I will talk to them again." I told him the next step better work, or I'll step over there myself and there'll really be a disturbance. They quieted down . . . some. I picked up a book to read and my son found a late movie to watch since there was no question about being able to sleep. I thought I'd give them until 12:30. Luckily the party began to break up around that time with the men finally leaving. Took me another half hour to fall asleep. Woke up late, had a late start on my trip home. Forgot to mention: we found the dismantled refridgerator in the middle of the floor of the first room we were assigned. The friendly lady desk clerk came up to give us keys to the room we ended up in. In hindsight, we would have been better off in the first room.

I was at the hotel for 4 days. My room was cleaned once, and then only after I complained. I still had to wait! On the plus ... side, the room I requested was not available at check-in, so they compemsated by giving me a suite on the lagoon. It was large and pretty nice. It had a full kitchen, but zero pans/utensils for cooking. Also had problems with wireless internet, which were (somewhat) resolved with an ethernet cable, which was delivered to my room without a knock!

When we checked in you could not have asked for nicer people. However once in the room we found there are no dishes or pans ... so the kitchen is usless. The pillows are awful, but the staff are very nice. We had a loud group move into the hotel on our last night and the staff had a hard time getting them to calm and quiet down.

Dated, but roomy motel in great location
thornhill Jul 11, 2009
The front desk person was very nice, the room had surprisingly good views of the pool and the nearby lagoon. When we checked ... in, we walked up a short flight of steps to the second floor. The hallway was extremely dark and covered with forest green carpets. Some of the rooms are non smoking, some aren't, so the smell of stale cigarettes permeates this hallway. Upon entering our non-smoking room, we were greeted with the almost overpowering perfume scent, something akin to Fabreze, which I suspect was used to cover up the stale cigarettes in the hallway. I opened the door to our balcony and turned on a ceiling fan (which wobbled precariously). By the second day, the smell had dissapated. The balcony was nice and quiet. The room was very big, with a kitchenette and three closets. Stains on the dark green carpet, and I noticed a suspicious looking stain on the opposite side of the mattress we were using, uncovered after sleeping all night. I might give them one more try, but not sure.

I wasn't looking for 5 stars, but this place had just what I needed without having to "slum". A good price, a nice clean pool ... with well maintained grounds, covered parking even. It had a kitchenette and a balcony, was next to an oceanside running trail, and had access to a fitness center also. There is a shopping center with some restaurants in it across the street, too. Great location next to the bus lines, BART, Sushi, and shoppping. The beach is across the street. Went to Alameda to go ... kiteboarding, good spot, decent wind. The hotel is definitely older but fine. Nothing fancy but the rooms have a kitchen, bring your own pots and pans or buy some cheap ones at TJ Maxx across the street. Trader Joes and Safeway are there too as well as a bunch of other shops. It was quiet there, the beds were comfortable, we brought our own pillows. Overall not bad if you are looking for something affordable and nothing fancy. You can get into SF in about a 1/2 hour on bus and BART.

APR May 11, 2009
This is my third stay at Coral Reef, which was probably built in the 1940's and is not a modern hotel with all the amenities, ... but a comfortable, well-priced, friendly place to stay. I always take a suite on the lagoon and watch the water fowl from the large porch. There is a full kitchen, but you have to supply your own cooking and eating equipment. The kitchen/living room area is enormous, bedroom separate. Wireless internet on premises; the guest computer is perennially out of order. Big Plus: Staff very friendly and accommodating. Extended continental breakfast served daily. Coffeemaker in all rooms. There is a very nice, although small, pool. Very quiet. 1/2 block from walkway along the bay. 10 minutes from airport. The only problem -- this visit only -- was that housekeeping was inadequate, even strange, in that housekeepers entered unit 2-3 times daily, instead of doing all tasks at once! I was there 5 days, and the unit was not vacuumed. There were no "Do Not Disturb" signs. I intend to stay at Coral Reef whenever I am in Alameda.

We have to go to Alameda often for business....thought this would be great. BIG mistake. The worst was not being able to open ... the window to get fresh air, because the rooms next door were smoking rooms. We thought we could at least sleep with the slider open at night....but the fellow was still smoking at three AM! In the middle of the night, the running toilet filled with HOT water! Horrible to sit on. Sometimes the sink would only have hot water, NO COLD! We strongly advise that you remove this hotel from your list.
