the hotel restaurant could have been better. ordered soup, salad and entree. the salad that was served and charged was the larger size. the table next to me complained about the charge. i don't think it is a good business practice to operate that way. i asked that the entree not be fired until i finished the salad. the entree came lukewarm, obviously had been sitting. the restaurant was not busy--4 tables. would not recommend it unless you didn't want to travel to eat.

We love this hotel. We stayed here last year and loved it and came back this year with our friends. The location is great. ... We wanted to spend some time shopping and enjoying downtown shopping but not staying in Downtown. This was perfect. The restaurant next door has great food and great service. I loved being close to the river... very scenic for long walks! I like to always try new places but when it comes to The Avalon Hotel.....I don't need the change!

Downtown Portland has great shopping and great restaurants. It's fun just to walk around and see the sights! If you don't have a rental car, The Avalon Hotel has a town car... at your service. Don't miss the winery trail on 99 south of Portland. Beautiful drive and great wine tasting.

Peaceful, upscale hotel
cindyh Sep 28, 2009
This is a very nice, upscale hotel. I've stayed here twice and really like it. There is a walking path behind the hotel ... that runs along the river. The restaurant next door is excellent for dinner. If you want to do anything besides relax, you'll need a car or taxi because there is nothing to do (shopping, etc.) within walking distance. The riverside rooms are nice, but don't expect to see much of the river through the trees. There is a small continental breakfast set up on each floor which is very convenient. If you want to use the spa be sure to make reservations.

An Overnight Treat
Hopeless Romantic Aug 12, 2009
We picked Avalon for our overnight stay because it had "spa" in the title. The rooms reflect their services...very Spa ... inspired. The bed was VERY comfy and the amenities offered sustainable products for bathroom products...something that matters to us greatly. The open deck facing the river is a nice touch. We will definitely be staying @ Avalon again.

The perfect retreat in the city
R and D Jul 21, 2009
We were looking for a relaxing get away for the night. From the minute we walked into the lobby we knew we had found the ... perfect spot. From the clean dramatic lines of the decor to the attentive valet service personnel, the Avalon lived up to our expectations. The room was large, comfortable, quiet and well appointed. The small but comfortable deck overlooked the river and the wind in the cottonwoods added to the peaceful mood. The Hotel provided everything anyone would need to feel pampered. To top it off, the bed was the most comfortable sleep my husband and I have had in a long time. The continental breakfast was seved in the common elevator area on every floor so making a run for coffee, muffins or fruit in the morning was quick and easy, what a great idea.

Avalon Stay Jun 5- 7
ArmyMan Jun 7, 2009
I was in the area for Army Reserve Duty, and had stayed at the hotel about 10 days earlier for the same reason. My only ... dislike about the hotel is that the parking is valet ONLY, and it costs $19.00 PER DAY. The AquaRiva restaurant, part of the hotel, is a nice relaxing place to eat, and it also sits on the edge of the river (adjacent to the hotel). The menu is good, as is the food, and the pricing is quite reasonable (soup, entree' and a beer for ~$25.00). The staff there is friendly and accommodating as is the Hotel staff. Very nice people, scenic location, easy to get on and off I-5, and a nice fitness facility as well. If they get more parking that does not require a Valet, I would rate it as a 5 Star experience, some may like the Valet, but, personally, I do not mind walking to my car.

Recommend the restaurant for those staying one or two nights on a busy travel schedule. No driving, and it is adjacent to the hotel.
