Great Hotel "Off the Strip" in Vegas

Try the $1.99 shrinp cocktail next door at the Golden Gate Hotel/Casino. Great deal!! Also, if you are traveling to the Las Vegas strip from The Golden Nugget, use the double-decker bus that runs on Las Vegas Blvd. 24 hrs a day and only costs $7.00 for a 24 hour pass!

Very Disappointed with Access Insurance
Chuck Feb 2, 2010
I was unable to stay at hotel due to missing my flight due to severe ice on roads in Charlotte, NC. I called the hotel to ... cancel and I was told to call Access, the trip insurance carrier. When I spoke to Access they would not do anything to reimburse me. Even though Air Tran Airlines gave me a credit of $285.30 to use on another flight. If the airlines was willing to give me a credit even though I was a "no show", I would believe that I should have been compensated by the insurance company both for my hotel and the shuttle service I was not able to use. Clearly the airlines understood the severe road conditions we had in Charlotte. So, I am not happy with the travel insurance and probably not take it if offered by Access.

We gambled the whole time. Didn't win but had a great time. The Golden Nugget is a delight. We upgraded to the Rush Tower ... (New since Nov.) It was wonderful. Very clean. Quiet. Beautiful. Made one mistake. Didn't take a room with a view of the strip.

Golden Nugget IBS visit
Turk Jan 25, 2010
Some points to consider: No desk in room to work at. Ala cart pricing was a surprise. Extra cost of internet ... service seemed oput of place, but maybe this is the current standard. No electrical outlets convenient to bed for medical device use. Rain is unusual fo Vegas, but a covered accres to detached parking would have been helpful. Lack of affordable eating options was disappointing. Closure of Carson Tower registration made registering very inconvenient, and small staff at check in (2) made the wait a long one. Public areas were a little stinky from impact of smokers. Slot action was not user friendly. Overall condition of the hotel was excellent.

The rooms have not been updated in 30yrs with exception of a large flat screen tv (but i didn;t travel 2000 mile to watch tv) ... the casino was nice nothing spectacular, poker room was great, buffet was awful, all expensive dining was high quality, food and service.pool was best i have ever seen. check in was a nightmare 45min wait. dealers were good some nice some not,the comps were very good i recieved a extra night and all my dining was on the house. the crowd was always good mixed ages. the staff was not always pleasant. all said if the rooms were cleaner and updated the food a little better and the workers a little happier it would have exceded my expectations, but it did not overall it was ok if the price is right absolutly do it but next time i will try somewhere else. unless i get another amazing deal

Could have been MUCH better
Vegas Regular Jan 22, 2010
This could have been a much better stay. I travel to Vegas 5-6 times a year for business but had never stayed Downtown. I ... enjoy downtown much more than the strip for entertainment value. It's always interesting even when you go every 2-3 months. The Nugget is a good hotel. I stayed in the base room in the Carson Towers. The room reminded me of a new Holiday Inn Express. clean, up to date but not glamorous. The problem is after waiting 45 minutes to check in, they sold out my room type and actually DOWNGRADED my room at the same price. I travel a lot and have NEVER had this happen. Everywhere I went, they were understaffed and those who were working were not friendly.

Downtown's Best!
John J. Jan 22, 2010
I wanted to stay downtown and did some research for locations to stay. The reviews I read about The Golden Nugget were for ... the most part positive. I was not disappointed! I stayed in the Carson Tower. The room I had was on a non-smoking floor. There were updates and renovations going on in that part of the hotel, but nothing that ever disturbed me. My room appeared to have been freshingly updated, and it was great! Very clean! The property is located on Fremont St. where you have access to The Fremont Experience and numerous other casinos and clubs within an easy walk. I also had plans outside of the city and the location offered very easy access to the interstate and no traffic congestion like on The Strip. If you like going to Las Vegas and are considering an alternative to the mega-resorts of The Strip, I would suggest The Golden Nugget as your first choice.

Fremont's Tony Roma restaurant always excellent and their Paradise buffet always the best in town. Did not care for Golden Nugget's buffet - set up poorly and lines grew fast due to the way they had the omelette set up in the middle - should have had a host letting people know they could go around.

Grotto's has the BEST Italian food in Vegas, and the servers are the most polite I have ever encountered anywhere. (That is saying something since hatefulness is commonplace here!) Excellent Margherita pizzas and the cheesecake with strawberries is to DIE for.

Took the "Deuce" (public transportation) to the Strip to see the City Center. Spent a few hours walking around this new and large complex of hotels, casinos, shops.
--Big Brother, Honolulu Jan 4, 2010
Although the hotel itself is fantastic, you can't experience the strip without taking a taxi or a bus, so, unfortunately, for safety and convenience sake, it appears much better to get a hotel directly on the strip.
--Tina, Phoenix Jan 2, 2010
Although the hotel was very nice, we had much better luck gambling at the 4 Queens. The staff at the 4 queens were very friendly and helpful. We only had a problem with one of the ladies running the dice table, but all of the other staff members were great. Take advantage of the players club, not only can you earn incentives but they also offer 2 for 1 meal deals at the Magnolia restaurant where the food is very good and the service was also very good (again we only had a problem with one of the cashiers who had problems figuring our the correct bill on our 2 for 1 deals with 7 people, so double check your bill). I would rate the experience at the 4 Queens as 4.8 out of 5.
