San Juan trip

The hotel was quiet during the week, but was beginning to get noisy by the time we checked out Friday morning. The beach, ... pools and hotel grounds were beautiful and it was a good location near the bus stop, but being that everything was so expensive in the hotel, we were surprised with a $100 per night upfront payment at check in for anything that "might" be charged to our room. Although we pay as we go, they would not back off and insisted we pay in advance. Because we were not made aware of this policy before departing for San Juan, we weren't financially prepared with a lot of extra cash or take a credit card with a higher limit. After traveling to Puerto Rico the last thing you need is to be on a tight budget because of an abnormal hotel policy. At check out we were refunded the entire deposit, minus the resort fee, since we didn't charge anything to the room. I've traveled to many countries and stayed in many hotels, but have never been asked to pay upfront for things I "might" charge to my room. I realize this is for the hotel's protection, but it could force some people into eating at the hotel because their food budget is involuntarily allotted to the hotel and the hotel gets to use a lot of other peoples' cash for a few days. We just want others to be aware of this so it can be figured into your travel budget. This upfront charge seems as it might be illegal.

We travel a lot. we would never go back to this hotel for the cost. we love the Island and are planing to go back just never ... there again. this by far is the worst hotel we have stayed in for price and service. we will be looking soon for a different hotel to stay at next. there is something wrong with a hotel for this cost that charges to use the ref. for personal use per day. and no coffee maker or micowave. and try to put everyone in the old part of the hotel unless they complane then move them to where they should have in the first place. not just us complaning, other couples were complaning at the pool and lobby about the same thing we were. no hot water not one day we were there. same complant from other guest.

Overall a good experience. Their fees/charges can add up if you don't pay attention. Ex. If you use the small fridge in your ... hotel room, it's $10.00 p/day. We rented a car, parking was $20.00 p/day. Two Int'l phone calls that had to be done from the room, were 200.00+ for less than 10 mins. combined. All hotels charge you for extras ... they seemed to be a little more expensive than the average. The rest I would say no different than other hotels. Lunch for two people w/one drink p/person was $65.00. not including tip. Drinks at the lobby bar averaged $10-$15. [...]with the discounted price we ended up paying, the hotel was definitely a good choice. I'm not sure I would be singing the same tune if we would have paid full price.

We got a good deal on a travel package for this 5-star hotel. The hotel gets a big plus for hosting great salsa and merengue ... bands in their lobby, Thursday through Saturday nights. On the down side, service at San Juan hotel is costly, such at $14.00/day (+ tax) for internet access, and $21.00 (+ tax and service) for the breakfast buffet. We know the area, so we took all our meals outside the hotel, eating great local Puerto Rican food while paying only about a quarter of what comparable meals would have cost inside the hotel.

I had visited P.R. many times in the past but had never stayed at this hotel. This was the first trip with family members ... which proved interesting. The hotel extrinsic decor is very lavish and beautiful with courteous and helpful employees. However, the hotel rooms does not match the hotel decor. The room reminded me of a Days INN or Howard Johnson. The rooms primarily on the eighth floor where we stayed had simple IKEA furnishing. The bathroom is small. There is no bathtub nor a lock on the bathroom door. There are only soap and shampoo in the room, NO mouthwash, lotion, shower cap, shoe cleaning kit or complimentary coffee maker machine. You do get a overpriced minibar which include imported water worth ten dollars.Eventhough the rooms were disappointing the overall trip gets thumbs up with needed consideration for customers rooms. If you wish to stay here try to get a room with some kind of discount, because the value of the room may not equal the cost of what you spend.

we went to relax for a few days and enjoy the beach and the sights. We were not disappointed. The hotel was very nice but ... we expected better rooms for a Waldorf Astoria. The rooms were clean but it is obviously an older hotel that could use more updating in the rooms. The lobby is beautiful, the staff was attentive. We lost at the casino but we expected to. The pool furniture was just shy of being shabby, but again everything was clean and well maintained. Hotel breakfast was only a buffet and expensive. We went next door to local restuarants for some meals. No coffee in the rooms!!!

Forty-year-old traveler! Oct 20, 2009
We were delighted upon check-in. The hotel was super chic and trendy. The staff was professional and efficient. We were so ... impressed with the three beautiful pools and beach area. The lounge chairs at the pool were the best I've used. The beach area provides free lounge chairs; however, you pay 10.00 per day if you want an umbrella. I especially liked that you could put your beach chairs anywhere you liked. We read other reviews & suggestions and took the A5 bus into Old San Juan three different times for only 75 cents. It worked well, but was at least a 30 min. ride. A cab will cost you 20.00 one way. We loved Old San Juan...if you go to this hotel...you must make the trip to Old San Juan. There is so much to see and do and it is a breathtaking old city. Be sure to visit the two old forts...unbelievable & great photo opps. We had read hotel reviews that mentioned the noise at this hotel. This is the only thing we didn't like. We did request a quiet area...told them we were light sleepers (no lie). We ended up on the 7th floor and that really helped, except for Thurs. night when a club opened up and had the loud music (I think you'll hear the music Thurs-Sat. nights). Be sure to request a quiet area if you don't like the thump thump of club music!Be sure to do excursions! We booked from the hotel, but had to rebook elsewhere b/c the hotel trip didn't have enough people. We met this guy named [...]. He owns his own tour company. He will pick you up at the hotel and take you to anything...catamaran, zipline, rainforest, etc. We were so impressed with him. He went out of his way to make it all great! He was way cheaper than taking a cab to these locations. His company is called EcoAction Tours. His number is [...]. If we return, we will book with him again. This trip and hotel were fabulous. We would highly recommend it. If you like a nice trendy hotel and want an 'upscale' pool area, restaurants, etc., then this is it. Also-it is only 5 min. from the airport, which makes access easier and cheaper.

Enjoyed our stay there. Good restaurants on site. Palms was great and the staff was wonderful. Try their happy hour ... bites. The pool was wonderful and you are able to go there any time. Make sure to bring bug spray because there are noseethem bugs and they do get you. Drinks are expensive but there is a grocery store close and you can get stuff there. On-site staff for tours not very good. Do research before you go and you will be more successful. Overall great hotel in good location.

The 1st night there I was not very pleased with the room the cabin room that I was given. The cabin room was not updated at ... all. I can't even give it a 1 star. After Iwas moved to inside the tower (in the hotel) my trip from there on, was wonderful. I did notice the next morning when I was at the front desk complainig there were other persons also complaing about the cabin type room. If you go there and the same thing happens to you, just let them know and they will change you to another room. Once I was in my perfect room my trip was a very pleasant one and I would recommend this hotel to everyone. One thing is that once it is 7:00pm males can not walk around the lobby in shorts, so make sure you pack either jeans or slacks. Drinks at the hotel are very pricey but very good. Make sure you visit Old San Juan, El Yunque, Bacardi Factory and Plaza Las Americas. This has been one of my best trips and would recommend Puerto Rico to everyone.

There is also a Chili's right across the street and if you take a left there is a Mexican Restaurant and 2 blocks down you will find a Denny's and Walgreens. If you walk to your right you will find several fast foods. I recommend that get a rental car cause the taxi fees are very high.

There is a supermarket very close by that you can't see from the main road. If you keep walking behind the Chili's, the road will soon veer to the right and lead to a Pueblo supermarket. Here you can pick up everything you'd want at much more reasonable prices.

Drinks at the hotel can be expensive if you plan on having more than just a couple. Hit up the Pueblo grocery store - 5 minute walk from the hotel and get snacks, drinks, etc. Also, the local restaurants are much cheaper than those at the hotel and very good.
