Quiet & Good Location

I don't think their Website mentions this at all (a serious deficiency I think), this hotel has handicapped-friendly rooms. ... When my wife asked about this, she was told there are rooms with bathrooms with a roll-in shower. That was great, and congratulations to Marriott for having such facilities. There is one problem with hotel rooms that are intended to be handicapped-friendly--the doors to the room have the same mechanism as do all the rooms, and they can be difficult for an impaired person to open. My wife has a tough time with these, and we have a severely impaired friend who literally is unable to open the door on 'handicapped-friendl' rooms she has been in in Las Vegas & elsewhere. She would have had the same problem with the door in THIS room. This is a planning detail that hotel designers & builders should learn about. While the hotel itself was just fine, I am frankly tired of hotels with 3-digit room rates tacking on fat charges for parking. At $20 or $25 a day to park at this hotel, this was like downtown San Francisco--except this is suburban San Diego. Breakfast in the sit-down restaurant was just OK--an eggs benedict dish lacked substance--thin, perhaps overly old Canadian bacon. On the other hand, the fruit plate was VERY good. Hooks on the bathroom door may catch a shoulder or arm when walking by. Could end up with a bruise where you least expect it.

Elijah's Restaurant--it amounts to a Kosher restaurant with great sandwiches & other dishes. Pickles & pickled tomatoes on the table. A big menu. It's in a shopping center maybe 3 miles from this hotel--there's a Whole Foods in that same center.

The La Jolla mall is a block away from the hotel, which was great, but, restaurants and bars were hard to come by. We ate at ... Donovan's, a delicious upscale steakhouse. We also ventured about 5-7 minutes to downtown La Jolla. There, we were able to find more entertainment.

Nice & Clean Hotel-Parking is NOT FREE!
Annie09 Aug 18, 2009
My cousin and I stayed one night at the Marriott so I don't have an extensive experience from our stay but I would like to ... point out a few things. THE GOOD. The first thing we noticed when we stepped in the hotel was its decor. The lobby is really nice with high ceilings, nice modern furniture, nice artwork, etc. It didn't have any stinky musty smell like some other hotels. The hotel staff was friendly when we checked in and out of the hotel. The room we stayed in was well kept and clean. They had plenty of outlets to plug in your cell phones chargers, laptop, etc etc. Another thing I want to add is their breakfast buffet. When we booked the hotel, we paid an extra $15 for breakfast buffet to be included. I highly recommend getting this! The buffet was small but had enough variety - fruits, pastries, cereal, potatos, sausage, eggs, yogurt, and they even have a chef there to cook you an omelet. When we finished eating, they gave us a bill (which they later zero-out on my credit card)...the going price is $22/person for breakfast buffet so that was worth it! THE BAD. They had a nice LCD tv in the room but all the free channels were BORING - the shows were all from the 80s and 90s. I guess they purposely made it boring so you can pay for movies. We had a balcony in our room but we couldn't get the door to open. And the windows were dirty looking out. Also, if you're travelling with kids, I just want to mention that there's no small fridge in the room so that may be inconvinent. But my BIGGEST COMPLAINT IS THE PARKING FEES - $20/night for self-parking. No where did it say on orbitz that there was a parking fee! If we had stayed a week there, we would've paid $140 for parking! That money should be going towards your entertainment cost NOT parking! Besides, the parking structure was small so the spaces were narrow and compact so that was annoying too. Because of the parking fees, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again!

Nice, but....

I booked my room through Orbitz and was told they couldn't guarantee a room type. With 4 of us listed as travelling ... together, I thought a double vs. a king would be a no brainer. To be safe though, I called the hotel the morning of our scheduled arrival to request a double and was told they couldn't guarantee it. I even offered to call after the 'check-in time' and was told they couldn't assign me a room until I physically arrived, even though my room was already pre-paid. We went to the hotel after a full day at Sea World, so I knew we would arrive late. To be fair, they did offer a rollaway or an aerobed if we had to take the king, but I was unhappy. I felt like I was being penalized for booking through a 'discount site'. This was especially annoying as the rate after taxes was twice what I typically pay for this area. We were ultimately given a double, but they acted like thay were doing me some huge favor. I travel with two teens who are unfortunately never separated from their laptops. Despite the suggestion on their website that wi-fi was available throughout the hotel, it really was only available in the lobby. In the room there was a single hard wired connection which of course cost more to use than my children were willing to let me pay. Especially because it would only cover one of them at a time. So they spent several hours of our weekend in the lobby. Parking was convenient but expensive, even for self-parking. The room however was lovely; the beds were clean and comfortable. Also the pool/health club was a major bonus. They actually have both an indoor and an outdoor pool, which was an unexpected surprise. Would I stay there again? Maybe - they are pet friendly and most of the time we bring our dog with us. But they wouldn't be my first choice in La Jolla.

nice rooms but better deals elsewhere
Nicole Jun 29, 2009
The hotel was clean and rooms were decent size. The hotel is fairly quiet. The only complaints are that the parking is $20 a ... day ($4 per hour) which is absolutely ridiculous since there's plenty of it in the parking structure. We ended up parking on La Jolla Village Drive and walked up to the hotel. Second, we booked a special offer where we were supposed to receive 4 movie tickets which they did not give us and claimed that our reservation did not include that. This special offer was one of the reasons I reserved a room at this hotel and they did not even follow through. They said we had to book directly through Marriott although the [...] listing included the offer. I will not stay here again because of this. The place is overpriced and not accommodating to their customers.

My mother and I went down to visit my brother for the weekend. It was a good location close to plenty of shops and ... restaurants. The hotel itself was nice and clean as well as the rooms, but the beds were very uncomfortable and they only had double's available. I was also disappointed that there was not free wireless internet in the rooms as most hotels have that. The breakfast they offered was also expensive where as other hotels throw in a small free breakfast in the mornings. Overall though it was nice, quiet, and clean.
