Best place to stay in Springfield
Teacher Nov 21, 2009
If you are interested in seeing the historical sights and presidential library at an affordable price, then the President ... Abraham Lincoln Hotel is the place to stay. I read many of the prior reviews and expected the hotel to be slightly rundown though clean. The hotel was very clean and though it is a little older than the neighboring high cost hotel it is in excellent shape with very large rooms, brand new Serta pillow-top mattresses, Egyptian cotton sheets, white fluffy towels, and a staff that is very helpful and friendly. I personally prefer the atmosphere, where I felt so comfortable and right at home. I would definitely return to the Abe Lincoln Hotel over any other. Though all major historical sights are within a few blocks of the hotel, the shuttle bus does pick up passengers every hour in the winter and every half hour in the summers. The shuttle goes to all the major sights and only costs $3.00 for a day pass. The Pres. A. Lincoln Hotel is the best place to stay, in my opinion. and it is VERY CLEAN and offers free newspapers every morning and free shuttle service to the train station. Just call them and they will pick you up.

Short but sweet

I arrived very late at night, stayed one night, and then attended a conference at the hotel and conference center which ... lasted for three days. The room itself was quiet and comfortable, the staff were pleasant, the amenities were plentiful and the conference was well-arranged.

Everyone who stays here should be aware of the fact that parking is not included in the room rate, and that there is an adjacent parking lot which belongs to the City of Springfield and is intended partly for use of the hotel guests. Rates are 75 cents an hour, max $7 per day.

Very Disapointed
Unhappy traveler Oct 22, 2009
I was expecting a very nice stay for my five day business trip in Springfield when I heard where I would be staying. This ... sadly, was not the case. I do not recommend anyone stay at this hotel, or believe the 3 star rating that is bestowed upon this establishment. The first thing I noticed every day when returning to my room is that it smelled of cheap men's cologne. This smell never went away during my week long stay. The toilet was dirty and had rings around it, and the seat was chipped. There was damage to the walls in the form of cracking. The bed was super hard and not in a firm good way. To accompany the rock hard bed there were 4 small travel sized lumpy pillows. The TV was very small, and all the furniture was very dated. There wasn't any fridge or microwave that I could locate at the hotel anywhere. The soda machines were always empty on each floor. The hotel staff was very snobby and unfriendly and appeared to have thought their hotel was much nicer than it really was. Parking was unsafe, unmonitored, and dimly lit. The only redeeming feature was the deceptively nice lobby which must have been recently redone. I asked to switch rooms after my first nights stay and got 4 more nights just like the first in a different room. Save your time and money, and go somewhere else. The location was also scary and I was approached several times by panhandlers, and asked for money. I felt very unsafe here.

Lincoln Home, Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, Old State Capitol Building are all a short walking distance. Ghost walk at night around downtown Springfield was fun and interesting. Tourist shopping close. Short drive to Lincoln Tomb, new State Capitol Building, Dana-Thomas House, and other attractions. Good parking at all of the attractions. We saw a lot in 2 days and 1 afternoon/evening. There were several places to eat downtown and in the hotel.
