I was not told about the $50.a night deposit until I arrived, needed $200. for 4 nights stay. The location was good and the ... room clean but the curtains would not close and the beds were like sleeping on a brick. The room was cleaned everyday and the staff were very nice.It would have been nice to have breakfast included in my stay. A surprising find in Chicago's downtown
Dale Nov 23, 2009
My wife joined me for a visit to the AWS show at McCormick Place and a few days of vacation in Chicago. As it turned out, ... selecting the Ambassador East Hotel was perfect. Being within walking distance to downtown was great. Transportation around town at first was confussing but we figured it out in short time. The Hotels close to McCormick place have very little to offer other than close proximity to the convention center. After the AWS show, my wife and I visited the Chicago Art Musium, Millenium Park, Musium of Science and Industry, We saw Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in The Addams Family at the Orinetal Theatre and many of the top rated restaurants.

I have always enjoyed the Ambassador, especially when the Ambassador West was still a hotel. Now I stay at the Ambassador ... East really for nostalgic reasons. Unless they upgrade soon, I will have too rethink my choice in hotels because to many areas of the hotel are lacking. Also, the Pump Room has lost some of its luster. The dinner I had was quite disappointing. The service was slow, and the food was not quite worth the prices they were charging. I know the Ambassador can return to its glory, I just hope they do it soon.

Wonderful hotel! Great bargain
40s Couple Nov 17, 2009
We are in our mid-40s and loved this hotel. The location just a couple blocks north of the Magnificent Mile is perfect. The ... neighborhood is quiet and safe so walking back to hotel at night is worry-free. Train station just 2 blocks away. There were people of all ages staying there (except didn't see any children) and all seemed to be enjoying it. This is a classic Chicago hotel with the famous Pump Room restaurant. Didn't eat there but had an enjoyable drink at the bar which overlooks the dining room. All staff were nice and very accommodating. The rooms are a little worn but spotlessly clean which is most important to me. Nice beds, bedding, and towels so who cares if the wallpaper could use some seam repair? The bathrooms appear to have original fixtures so they look nice but also show some wear and tear. The cracks/chips in some of the tile and porcelein didn't bother us. Again, everything, including bathroom, was spotlessly clean.

Take the Chicago food tours. We booked one on Zerve which was the walking tour of Old Town/Gold Coast. It is a nice walk through classic Chicago neighborhoods stopping at various interesting shops along the way. Ends at a pizzeria where you are served a piece of Chicago-style stuffed pizza. Great tour.

Sluggy Nov 16, 2009
Within easy walking distance of bars and restaurants and of course Lake Michigan. Rooms were of a good size, very clean and ... the staff were very helpful. Don't miss the "Bean" - it's a fantastic idea and great fun. Chicago is such a great laid-back place we can't wait to go back again. The entrance to the hotel was very impressive and of course it also has The Pump Room - great experience. Easy access to public transport but easily enough to walk to many places.

Good find! Nov 16, 2009
I was in Chicago for a girl's weekend. We wanted a hotel at a low price that was close to our friend's apartment. It was on ... a nice quiet side street away from the busy Michigan Avenue, but still within walking distance of shopping and restaurants on Rush Street. The room and hotel itself, though older, were very clean. The service was also good (we called for a roll-a-way bed and it arrived, free of charge, in under 5 minutes).

Two sisters Nov 12, 2009
I loved this hotel. I am into historic preservation and the fact that this hotel was on the Historic Landmark list sealed the ... deal for me. The neighborhood had some of the most beautiful architecture around. It was a quiet, safe neighborhood and I enjoyed just walking around the block. The concierge, [...], was most helpful and steered us a block away to a great neighborhood diner for breakfast. Our room was quite large and comfortable. I didn't eat at the restaurant, The Pump Room, but it was fantastic old Hollywood. I could just imagine the Rat Pack hanging out there!

. Nov 2, 2009
Overall great experience. Hotel is old and showing a bit of wear. My bathroom could have used some major renovation to add a ... bit more class. Hotel has tons of charm. Great architecture and things you don't see in the newer hotels. Classy bar as well. TV was very small as well. Great staff however and the location was cool. Only a few blocks from the red line as well.

I could walk to everything I needed and safely. Once I left the hotel, I was immediately involved in the outdoor activity ... with access to everything I could ever want. The hotel employees were very helpful and thoughtful. The Pump Room provided instant friends if that is what you were looking for. I sensed it was very "inclusive" there and if it was a party you wanted, they had it.

Traveling with my business partner, booked a double room for one night. Through a miscommunication he also booked the room ... which we realized at check-in. They did not allow us to cancel the extra room without the full-night penalty of $186, despite having plenty of rooms available (did not cost them a booking). Furthermore since we now only needed singles, I did not get the $60 difference refunded. My partner in frustration asked if they could at least throw in the $10 internet services (nope not free which is another bad service sign) for our rooms, but nope no dice. Not a hint of any attempt to satisfy a returning customer..

Take the El Blue Line from O'Hare to the Loop then, get off at the Loop and hop on the Red Line and get off at Clark & Division. Very short walk from Clark & Division and the El is the cheapest way to get in downtown.

CVS Pharmacy at Division and State (2 blocks), Walgreens at Division and Dearborn (3 blocks), Jewel Food Store at Division and Clark (4 blocks) for in room snackies/booze; "Mr. J's" at 822 N State and "Five Faces," next door to Butch McGuire's, on Division for hot dogs, gyros, Italian beef, etc., all the artery clogging goodies allowed on vacation. Head west on Goethe 7 blocks and you'll hit Wells Street. Plenty of bars and restaurants with menus in all price ranges. A few of my faves - Orso's, Topo Gigio, and the Fireplace Inn. Enjoy!
