We reserved at the place to spend some quiet time instead it was very close to the train track. The train go by very often ... and when it does, it's noisy. Room was above average. Mattress was too soft and not very comfortable. Free basic wifi (350 Kbps). Retail shops were not open when we got there around 5pm. Good selection of restaurants near the hotel.

We were traveling for family business. Therefore, our routine was not a leisurely one. To get straight to business, our ... stay at the hotel was great. The room was clean and the floor we were on was very quiet. The beds were very comfortable and the spacious. With regard to the staff, they were very friendly and very prompt in their service. The hotel management was stellar during our stay as well. If we travel to the area again, we will certainly check this place again. Thanks for your time.

There is a number of eateries around but when you want a snack, you want a snack. The snack bar is a little expensive at the hotel. Luckily there is a store around the corner where you can get snacks and drinks at a reasonable price. I believe it is called BevMo.

If your room is not on the bay side, bring ear plugs. The train can be a bit noisy. Also, it's a bit hard to find bottled water as there are no vending machines, so make sure to purchase some.

Anneke from Holland Nov 16, 2009
The hotel is close to several great restaurants. The Fat Lady has superb quisine and wonderful, Victorian atmosphere - the ... Halloween decorations were unique and a feast for the eye. The Pearl Jam (part of the hotel) has marvellous food and lovely, personable service). The ferry to San Francisco is close by, but one could simply go to the Oakland Piedmont district for good food and exceptional shopping. The room off the lobby, with its roaring (gas) fire, is a pleasant place to chat. The manager offered chamomile tea when my daughter and I were there. I would never stay anywhere else in Oakland!

Nice, but...
Cal Bear Oct 5, 2009
We were visiting UC Berkeley for homecoming and reunion weekend, which meant all the hotels near the University were fully ... booked or way over priced. We opted to stay in Oakland since we were renting a car anyways. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who had this idea as there were many Cal Bears staying at the hotel the same weekend. Had we not had the car, getting to/from anywhere would have been difficult as the hotel is not really conveniently located to a BART station - it's a long walk through some shady blocks. Anyhow, the check in process was fine, no complaints there. The room itself was fine, clean and very comfortable. We also had a nice view of the Bay. Nice amenities like a huge flat screen TV, free WiFi and good quality toiletries in the bathroom. One thing I like about the Joie de Vivre hotel chain is how well it decorates each of its properties. They all have a distinctive character. We liked the hotel and the room just fine until it was time to sleep. As other reviewers may have mentioned, the hotel is very close in proximity to train tracks. And the trains run throughout the night. And you hear them because they blow their horns as they pass through the area (our guess is that it is a safety thing since they run on a road where cars can drive and cross?). Not really the hotels fault, but if you're looking for a hotel where you can have a nice restful night of sleep, this really isn't the one for you. Valet parking charge is pretty steep $20, but you really don't have any other choice. Street parking is not an option since it is prohibited overnight. There's a nearby garage that is a little cheaper but it closes down in the middle of the night. We did get back to the hotel later one night and opted to grab a quick bite and drink in the hotel restaurant/bar, Miss Pearl's. This was after taking a walk around Jack London Square and the nearby neighborhood. We realized JLS is really a sad and depressing place to be at night - it's a lot more run down than it used to be and many of the retail or restaurant spaces are sitting vacant. Anyhow, at Miss Pearls we shared two appetizers and they were quite yummy! We had the "Mini Skirts and Buns" (cute name for skirt steak sliders) and the sweet potato fries. They hit the spot.

Gem in a Desolate Town

I wouldn't call it a Luxury Hotel-that's reserved for the Ritz-Carlton type of hotels, but it is a nice and clean hotel. A ... 3-star at least. I didn't even realize that they had a nice boutique hotel along the wharf. We stayed at the Waterfront hotel because of the Yoshi show and had a nice time at the hotel. Nice hotel, granite bathrooms, nice sized rooms, HD tv, and a comfortable and clean bed. Can't complain too much except for the price. A little too over priced compared to the Marriott and other comparable hotels, considering the 3 star rating and the economy these days. Otherwise, the stay was pleasant, wasn't even bothered by the trains either!

We have stayed at the Waterfront twice. Very nice hotel right on the Oakland waterway...nice sailboats go buy...right on Jack ... London's Square. Many shops are closed due to the economy but many aren't. Barnes and Nobles is there...Ben and Jerry's....many restaurants too choose from. Very clean hotel. Easy to find off freeway.

There have a wonderful Carribean restaurant called Miss Pearl's. Great jazz on Friday and Saturday nights. You are at the center of Jack London Square...sailboats...waterways.....free movies in the square. Great fun. Hotel...big towels...lots of freebies in the room. Has a fireproof. Because its on the water, bring warmer clothes..........sweater, sweats, long pants. It warms up in Summer after 11:00am.

Two from KFalls Jul 23, 2009
You pay for staying at the Jack London waterfront. It is a hotel, and they charge you because there are no machines not even ... a coke machine in the hallways. But if you want to take the ferry across to Fisherman's Wharf, it is right next door, and easy to take.Beat the traffic and problems take either the BART or the best bet the ferry. Staff was very courteous and helpful giving directions for the BART and eating locations. Easy walking to resturants.

Location is great right at the bay. I didn't like the adjacent restaurant that is offering breakfast from 7 - 9.30 am. If ... you are early you don't get anything and if you are late (after 10 am ) you can order brunch. Breakfast choices are limited and no buffet is avilable. The Waterfront Plaza Hotel in downtown Oakland at Jack London Square was in a prime location for multiple dining ... experiences. The hotel staff was extremely attentive to my needs and helped on several occasions. The room was very clean and comfortable, although a little smaller than normal. The staff was friendly & helpful, but the positives end there. The hotel is run down, loud, & in general poor repair. ... Cleanliness was average, but the TV wasn't working & 1/2 of the lightbulbs were burned out. I stayed there to go to a Raider's game since I have season tix & thought being close & in Jack London Square would be nice. There was a nice farmer's market on Sun. but the area is somewhat depressed with many of the small shops now closed. The Waterfront looks nicer from the outside than the inside.

Anneke Sep 8, 2008
The bed was very comfortable with a lovely down comforter and several pillows. The room was large, as was the bathroom. ... Everything was spotless. There was a huge TV, which made my daughter happy. On Sunday there was a great farmer's market right outside and I loved the historic area (Jack London Square). Staff was very helpful and kind. Personally, I liked the sounds of the train coming by every so often, but the loud whistle might disturb some people. When we closed our window and had the air-conditioning on, it was OK. At any rate, the trains appear to stop around 11PM. The only thing I did not care for was the price I was charged for the breakfast (I'm not a huge eater). There did not seem to be an option for continental breakfast (croissants, Danish, fruit), so the next day we went to the Buttercup Cafe down the street. I really liked Oakland as it was my first visit there, and I do intend to come back to the Waterfront Hotel.
