I loved the location and could walk everywhere I needed to go in Downtown Des Moines. However, I ordered a King room with ... "office area" and ended up with two double beds and a small desk, old TV that buzzed a little. The bed I used wasn't terribly comfortable, and while the lobby and things were nice and historic, the room just seemed old and not kept up. Think Motel 6 bed spread. I really hope for them that they remodel soon.

Django's, the French restaurant! For two people, split an appetizer, salad, main dish and dessert, so you can try more than one or two dishes.

Hotel Fort Des Moines "Downtown" Weekend
Joey in Des Moines Dec 14, 2009
Great location in downtown Des Moines for a weekend getaway. Close to restaurants and shopping. Nearly deserted hotel ... during the weekend we stayed which was kinda nice, although the pool was closed for repair and the lobby bar was closed for lack of business. Next door 5-star restaurant and a brew-pub next door to that made the closed lobby bar a moot point. Nice clean older hotel and a GREAT value!

Although the rooms were shabby, and in need of refurbishing, the staff was really terrific. On Saturday night we were in a ... hurry because our older son had to get a report in to his college, and we had little time for dinner before the evening theatre performance. They helped us get our food, and when they saw us walk through the lobby to head to the theatre, they suggested that the hotel shuttle take us there to save us time...our thoughtful, and they acted happy to help....it was way above the call of duty...

We went to see Dave matthews at principle park. It was a short 15 minute walk to the park in probably the cleanest city i've ... been in. The only thing i have to complain about is the pool was closed. It looked like a nice pool when booking and was looking forward to a morning swim. Staff was nice and helpful. Room was clean and nice. Tv was a little out of date but we where there to sleep not watch tv. And the brewery next door had awesome beer and great food!!! Would deffinately stay again, for that price. there was also plenty of night lifeso that added to the fun

Avoid This Hotel
Dennis Aug 26, 2009
The reservations website for the hotel was down for each of the three days I tried to make a reservation. I tried the 800 ... reservations # and it was busy. I then emailed the reservations dept email aslisted on the website.....NEVER got a response. (This all was a sign of how things would go.) Made the reservations through Orbitz, confirmed it with the hotel. Front Desk staff poorly trained or motivated. Female answering the phone was abrupt, never identifying herself. THERE IS NO WIRELESS CONNECTION at this hotel. When I called this unidentified female about the connection she said: "restart your computer, it's working down here" Of course, that didnt work, I didnt call back, not wanting to disturb her with any customer service issues. Parking is a nightmare, and the FD knowledge of where to park is limited to: "across the street". The bus load of drunks parked at the door, various bus patrons drinking on the sidewalk, and transporting cases of beer was unnecessary. There was no indication that the hotel was part of some kind of 'PubCrawl'. In the room we spent the day whispering, so that our neighbors wouldnt hear us the way we could hear them. Again, I never once considered asking the Front Desk for any help. Why annoy an already belligerent and unhappy unidentified female?

Overall it was a nice stay. The hotel was beautiful inside. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was ... that it doesn't get really cool in the room. It wasn't hot just a not as cool as we would have liked. There wasn't temperature control for the ac in the room. However the staff was very nice and gave a couple of fan whiched helped.

Needed to stay downtown close to capital building for wedding reception. Hotel is a historic landmark and the rooms show ... this, needs some updating. Hotel staff and lobby and restaurants and bar area very inviting. Simply lacks the modern updates of normal hotels. Could have stayed at cheaper hotel for 2 nights with same room quality for the cost of this for 1 night.

Great hotel, location, and price
Kim Jul 5, 2009
Lovely hotel seems more carefully maintained than tarted up to be modern. The bathtub is long enough for a man to stretch out ... in, with a great shower and huge soft towels. The pool is on the 6th floor with panoramic views of the lovely little city. Staff are friendly and helpful. The elevators are efficient--and there are enough of them--but they have (I guess) the original brass-looking doors. Opening into the lobby is the door to Django's, an "informal French restaurant" with delicious food and a classic bar--white-shirted waiters serve booze or excellent take-out coffee. Around the corner, the Racoon River Brewery has MUCH better food than one usually finds in such places, plus billards. Parking building across the street (in back) was free the whole weekend I was there and had plenty of space. The hotel is on the skywalk--especially important if you travel in winter--and within walking distance of the river park and the Botannical Center (if you can walk 20-30 minutes). During our stay, a Des Moinesian told me that there were plans to renovate the hotel. Don't touch it! That's what I say.

My mother, daughter, and I stayed one night at the Hotel Fort Des Moines and all agreed that we would come back. The hotel ... foyer is beautiful and the staff friendly/helpful. Our hotel room was spacious (2 queen beds and a pull out sofa). My daughter slept on the pull out sofa, and although the mattress was thin, I did not get complaints from a usually picky teenager. She was happy becasue she could watch her own tv shows and my mother and I could watch or not watch the other tv in the next room. My daughter used the pool and we were the only ones at the pool. I am not sure it would be a great pool for younger swimmers- more suitable for lap swimming. There was also a hot tub, sauna (which we did not use becasue we ran out of time), and plenty of towels. Next to the pool area is a gym, but we did not use the exercise room.
