Nice place

The hotel was about a 15 minute ride from downtown Miami and about 30 minutes from Miami Beach but would be closer if not for ... the high volume of traffic on the strip. We were there for a 4 night concert event at the AA arena and it was very convenient. There is a $1.25 toll to get to the venue but no toll returning back to the hotel (same goes for the beaches). If you're looking for a beach vaction I'd suggest something on the strip as finding a parking spot is nearly impossible but if you're going for an event downtown it's perfect. The neighborhood was clean and safe with liquor and grocery stores conveniently located just minutes away. If you do plan on cooking in your kitchen, do be advised that there are NO POTS or COOKING UTENSILS AT ALL!! We weren't able to use the kitchen, which was the plan. However, the kitchen is very nice with stove top and large fridge so if you do plan on cooking it's worthwhile to pack a pan or two, and don't forget the basic cooking utensils. We did have a strainer but I wouldn't count on that being standard. The staff in the office was helpful during the day but the laundry woman answers the front desk phone late night and she couldn't even recommend somewhere to get grub late night, and she wasn't pleasant. Miami is a beautiful city but it's full of crime and a corrupt law enforcement, so if you're looking to have a good time and to keep your civil liberties throw this location out the window. Miami is like being in foreign country. Most of the service people can't speak any english, not even to tell you where the bathroom is located. However, there was no problem at the Homestead and the staff is fluent in spanish too if you need it. I would never suggest Miami as a good vacation spot but if Phish were to play there again and I decided to return (and that's a big IF) I'd definately stay at this hotel. Oh yeah! The maid doesn't clean your room if you're staying for more than a night but at least you don't have to worry about things getting stolen or misplaced! I enjoyed this hotel. They actually respected the "Do Not Disturb" sign, something other places I've staid at recently did not do. When we were late checking out we weren't awoken to the maid entering, the front desk actually gave as a call and generously gave us an extra half hour to get ourselves packed showered and out the door. Very modern, clean, nice pool though small and a very helpful day staff (especially the manager-- very nice guy). Enjoy!

Decent Hotel for the Money

This is a bare bones hotel. Must like Jets! Flying over hotel from Miami International constantly. Location was pretty well ... centrally located to eateries, shopping etc. You get what you pay for, no extra's. But, that's what I wanted. A cheap stay, clean linens, towels etc. They will supply you with clean towels, toiletries, etc when you ask them. Very friendly and willing staff. Two vending machines on property, one with drinks, the other with snacks. Kitchen was barely equipped, but I had no plans on using it. Sinks drained slowly, bathroom tub was fine. No surprises for me, got what I expected. Would stay there again if the need arises. There is a very nice park next door to hotel, with a one mile walking, riding path, benches, pond, grills, restrooms, playground for the kids.

Millers Ale House across street from hotel. Sports bar type restaurant. Very nice! Was another restaurant, Tony Roma's, and a pizza joint down the street. I did not go to either of these last two locations.

Steakhouse next door is a 7 on a 1 to 10. One advantage is the Homestead is within 15 minutes of the airport.

Low dollar, cheap sleep
Christopher Jan 5, 2008
The Hoemstead was a low end, low budget hotel with few amenities. Internet was not free, the kithchen facilities were ... spartan - no glasses, few plates, no utensils. The bathroom was barebones - no shampoo, no dryer. No room service - unless you stay over a week they don't clean your room or change the sheets. Would not stay here again.
