Nice Place, good value!
Travel Bug Dec 5, 2009
Nice new hotel built in 2004, we were off season (end of November), perhaps that would explain limited activities especially ... at night. Big plus, it wasn't crowded..... Limited bilingual personnel contributes to lack of excitement when trying to recruit guests for daily activities. Has a good Spa, gym and yoga/Pilates classes, but again if the staff was more comfortable speaking English they would be more successful at making all the activities more exciting. Nice size pool and small water ride and diving hole for the kids. Food is good, but it seems to be the trend in these types of resorts, that buffet is always the best place to eat dinner in terms of variety and quality. Other restaurants are not good at neither food or service, went twice, all orders were messed up, but I should mention that waiters were trying hard (again, perhaps the lack of simple English vocabulary). Rooms are very clean and spacious with good views, they even offer 5 different pillow types, mattress though not comphy. Make sure to check out beech bar at night, nice set up. Location kind of far away from everything, if planning to visit a lot of places outside of the resort, consider the distance (a least 1 hour from parks, Cancun, playa del Carmen etc...)Overall, good resort if you get a good deal....

El Cid was a great place to stay. We enjoyed it tremendously! Our 9 yr old daughter and 13 yr old twin boys loved the ... pool. Especially the 2nd level pool with the rock to jump off of. My husband & I enjoyed not having to grocery shop, cook or clean. The grounds and rooms were always kept very clean. The service and friendly atmosphere made our stay just wonderful. The beach was small but beautiful. The waves were pretty calm until a storm started rolling in. Not big enough to boogie board on though. Which were not included! Included were rides on a hobie cat. Fun! You could also use the kayaks too.

We took an easy local bus ride into Puerto Morelos @ 5 pesos/person to go snorkeling. We talked some local guys down to $60 for the 5 of us. It was a 10 min boat ride to the reef where we were lead around for about an hour. Then they took us to another site close to that one to snorkel for another hour. We thought it was great! And a good deal.

Low-key luxury
m Nov 25, 2009
The hotel was relatively quiet when we were there the week of November 16, which was exactly what we wanted. The staff were ... all very friendly, and the food was great. There was plenty of room at the beach and at the pool. We don't have children, so it was nice that the kids tended to stay close to one area of the pool, while adults w/o children stayed on the beach or at the other end of the pool. Grounds and rooms were immaculate, and looked just like the photos on their website. Our only complaints: a lot of coral in the ocean and mosquitos. We wished that the hotel put a screen door on the balconies so we could get some fresh air in the room, but the door could not be left open because of the bugs. Overall, a great trip.

We came to El Cid for quick three night vacation. The room was great. We upgraded to the Platinum Club before we arrived ... and found it to be worth it. It would not have ruined the trip if we had not upgraded, but it did have its perks. The staff was very nice throughout the resort. The location was great. Isolated from other resorts but close enought to the small town of Puerto Morelos. I didn't find PM worth going to unless you were taking a special tour. The food was good and they tried to mix it up so even if you stayed longer, you should be fine. The drinks were good and had a variety of top shelf alcohol. You might not find everything you want, but there were plenty of options to enjoy yourself. The main pool was cold. But the adult jacuzzi was the perfect temp and close enough to a bar. I would have no problem going back.

Disappointed&looks could be deceiving
JOA Nov 14, 2009
My friends and I mostly stayed by the bar and the pool since there wasn't any activities except for outdated board games. I ... feel this resort did not have a good activities schedule for adults and or events. During my stay it rained the whole time so it was very disappointing that the resort didn't really have anything for us adults to do indoors. The staff was not knowledgeable at all and they weren't helpful. We basically had to find out information on our own. Not enough food variety. They only had 2 food buffets and 1 restaurant. In the evening time after 9 all music is shut down and so is the liquor. the lights are also turned off throughout the resort and this I find to be a danger to the people there. I also did not like the fact that the pool and the 1 Jacuzzi is also shut down past a certain time which really doesn't give the people staying there the option to do much of anything in the evening time, which basically forces you to go outside of the resort since the resort is basically pretty much "sleeping" past 11. I have been to Mexico Riviera Maya before and I have never had such a bad time. I know I will never go to this resort again and let alone recommend it to anyone else.

Greeted upon arrival, free upgrade to ocean view was appreciated. Food was good. Service was excellent but we tipped daily a ... total of $20-25 USD between breakfast, lunch and dinner and beach waiter and bartenders. All staff was friendly. I didn't see anyone else tipping, which was a shame.Dinner reservations need to be made early. Platinum upgrade would be necessary in high season but in mid sept we didn't need it. This hotel was definately a 4 star rating. Isolated from town but we liked it that way. Tipping is your key to a fantastic vacation. The staff really appreciate it. I don't think their wages are high enough not be tipped on top of the gratuities the hotel gives them.Rooms were nice and large. Towels a little rough and TP not great. Take water shoes or tevas, reefs in area. Take alot of sunscreen! Go early to Marina restaurant.

Very Enjoyable!!
Mrs. Giles Jul 27, 2009
My husband and I stayed at the El-Cid for our honeymoon. We did the All-Inclusive package and got moved up to the Platinum ... Club for being honeymooners. It was our first time to Mexico and we definitely enjoyed our experience. The All-Inclusive was great because it included ALL FOOD and DRINKS, including any alcoholic beverages (we took advantage and had some Crown Royal for the first time!) I recommend the "reef" drink if you can find someone who knows what it is (try ordering it in the bar in the lobby), but it's green on bottom and blue on top. They also have a special drink called the "riviera maya" which is also tasty. The Platinum Club got us a butler service and they prepared a jacuzzi for us a couple nights with some aromatherapy, kept our mini-bar stocked, made reservations for us, gave us access to movies and computer use...anything. It's definitely a good service to have. It usually took about 30-40 minutes for them to do what we requested, but that was perfectly ok since we were on vacation and didn't really have a time-frame. Just book things in advance and you won't have any trouble! The restaurants were good enough, all very clean and the staff is very quick to get your order and drinks. We got a little tired of the food and felt like we were eating the same thing every day by the end of it. We took advantage of guacamole, pico de gallo and margaritas whenever we could and that lack of variety could've been our downfall... We went from July 19-25th and it was extremely hot, but sunny every day except for Friday when it was overcast. The forecast kept saying thunderstorms every day, so I was getting worried, but we never saw them...

Tulum and Xel-Ha excursions were all in one. We went to Tulum in the middle of the day and I almost passed out from the heat. Wear a hat, sunglasses and lots of sunscreen. A lot of places only allow bio-degradable sunscreen, so you might want to just buy that when you get to Mexico. Tulum is beautiful, but not very interactive. Xel-Ha was really busy, but it was neat seeing the dolphins, parrots, manatees, tucans and iguanas out and about. We snorkeled and tubed down the river.

We had a wonderful time at El Cid. All of the staff were very friendly, clean rooms, great pool, lots of wonderful ... activities. The food was good, service incredible, staff very attentive. My only complaint was at the spa. I did the tezmacal (not cheap) I was told when I booked that it was a minimum of 2 1/2 hours, but to allow 4. They had finished in 1 hr 45 minutes, turns out they had booked another to follow mine just 2 hours later! It felt a bit rushed, and now I know why.

Mom Apr 22, 2009
Upon arrival our room wasn't ready, told to come back in 30 minutes. Returned and waited a while longer and then went to the ... room, and the room had a king size bed for 3 people. Went back to front desk and was told I would have to pay additional for a different room. Argued with staff, until I was given a room with a king bed and a murphy bed (not comfortable) but did not have to pay extra. The rooms do not have a bathroom, they have a glass door which has a toilet and another glass door where the shower is. No privacy to dress. Only one family out of the five families got the room they booked. Felt like it was a scam to get more money. Buffet selections were so-so, reservation only restaurant was awful. Had a table for 20 and they split the table in half with servers and each half ate at different times. Housekeeping was another nightmare. They would take your towels but not leave clean towels or it would be 4:00 and they still hadn't cleaned your room. I wouldn't recommend this resort.

I booked the honeymoon suite with ocean view....nice room...horrible view...complained and was switched to ocean side room which was very nice. You can get some real savings if you want to give up 1 1/2 hours to listen to their sales pitch. It was almost worth it until the guy become really pushy, borderline harassment. The hotel was chosen for a relaxing vacation. We even paid more on the Orbitz site to get a better room (don't waste your ... time doing this the hotel does not honor it). We also emailed ahead of time and asked not to be in Bldg 18 because of the bird noise-we were put in bldg 18. The birds start squaking at 4 AM. We paid for the Platinum Club bc we heard it was so much better-do not waste your money. You get the same selection of alcohol as everyone else and the club is always out of bottled water. We could hear everything out neighbors did and said. The power went out in our building which-from reading on line this is a weekly occurance. Nice Staff, a mess up daily
Jina Jul 26, 2008
We were supposed to get a daily newspaper (in english) delivered to our room and only received it twice (were there for 5 ... days)and one was in spanish. We put in a breakfast order twice and only received it once. I guess room service forgot. On our last day there we woke up to find that our coffee maker in our room was missing the carafe, we called to report it and they said someone would come to the room, but by the time we had to check out we still never received a coffee carafe, to make coffee that day. The power went out on a daily basis usually only for a minute or two but on the last night there it was out for at least a couple hours in the middle of the night which meant no air conditioning and no ceiling fan and no water either. It was hot and humid there so that was not fun, we woke up because it was so hot. They do not tell you unless you ask someone, but there are crocodiles in the lagoons at the resort, I really did not mind that since they seemed to stay in the water and not walk around the resort (although they could, there are NO fencing or anything to keep the crocodiles in or to keep children out). I saw one in the lagoon in front of my balcony, the lagoon where you have to walk over a bridge to get to the rest of the resort, and feel that they should at least put signs up or something to warn the guests since small children were running right by the lagoon chasing iguanas, and the crocodile could have easily attacked the children if he wanted to. The food was somewhat bland, pretty much the same things at the buffet. The crepe's were wonderful though. The pool area and beach are nice, but wear water shoes or something at the beach since I stepped on something in the water (like a pipe or something) and hurt my foot. The staff are very friendly, the bartenders at the pool are wonderful, and the resort is very clean, that is all that is good about this hotel.

Xel-Ha was really busy, but it was neat seeing the dolphins, parrots, manatees, tucans and iguanas out and about. We snorkeled and tubed down the river.

Puerto Moreles is a very tiny village with a few shops. It is worth a taxi drive in to say you saw it but souvenirs are cheaper in the hotel lobby.

The only place nearby is the small town of Puerto Morelos. There is a small shopping area there. If you want to leave the resort, it probably is by cab and a half hour anywhere other than Puerto Morelos. We enjoyed a shopping trip to Playa De Carmen, about $35 dollars each way but 5th avenue was a good shopping zone.
