Sorry, we cannot perform that search at this time. Either the pick-up or drop-off location needs to be an airport.

The world's second-largest country is also the western hemisphere's most pro-gay nation, eclipsing even parts of Europe in tolerance and acceptance.

Canada mirrors the U.S. in its geography: Its eastern provinces are home to large major cities coupled with New England-style quaintness, while its center is full of amber waves of grain, and its west is defined by the otherworldly Rockies. Canada is for the most part huge and empty, the bulk of its populace snuggled against its southern border. But the emptiness is nicely tempered by liberal and sophisticated islands of urbanity. Toronto and Montreal have huge, over-the-top LGBT scenes that would make even New Yorkers or Londoners blush. Vancouver reflects West Coast ideals of natural and healthy living, while even in the more remote cities of Winnipeg and Edmonton, an open gay lifestyle prevails. Lesbian life is more in the foreground of Canada's LGBT scene than in other countries.

Canadian attitudes toward sex and sexuality are straightforward -- as seen in its open, upscale strip joints, bathhouses and bars -- and that can be a shock to most Americans used to a more hidden scene. No wonder "Brokeback Mountain,"" The L Word" and "Queer as Folk" were all filmed in Canada.

Travel Tips

1. Don't bite off more of Canada than you can chew.
Like trying to see all of the United States in one trip, seeing more than two or three spots at a time in Canada is pointless. Each city is its own destination.

2. Be Canadian: Be Polite.Whether they admit it to you or not, Canadians see Americans as assertive and curt. Be sure to always say please, thank you and excuse me, and be careful about speaking your mind too forcefully.

3. Throw your French out the window. You may be proud of your college French, but understanding the Quebecois dialect can be mind-boggling to the uninitiated. Having said that, most of Canada is bilingual, and reading French can help you get by. And Canadians can understand your French even if you can't understand theirs.

4. Don't expect much of a queer scene outside of the major cities.
Despite Canada's liberalism, its hinterlands are pretty much devoid of anything gay, and some cities like Calgary and Ottawa don't have much of a scene at all.

5. Be prepared for the Canadian winter. If you think Minneapolis or Chicago can be freezing around Christmas, wait until you've experienced Canada. On the flip side, you'd be hard-pressed to find better skiing than in Whistler (British Columbia), Banff (Alberta), or Mount Tremblant (Quebec).
