Spring break
The Orbitz Family Vacation Guide

The moms and dads on the Orbitz Parent Panel share their collective wisdom this month on planning a family-friendly spring break vacation.

The Orbitz Parents Panel

We went looking for travel experts who were also doting parents and found them right under our nose. These Orbitz parents have plenty of experience traveling to a variety of destinations with children of all ages. Join them as they share their vacation adventures, mistakes and successes -- as well as personal strategies, tips, and opinions.

Ian Ross is the father of two children ages 19 and 21. His family loves beach vacations, especially in Aruba, Cabo San Lucas and Florida.

Carla Alberti is a market manager for Orbitz. Her travels have taken her all over the U.S. and Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. She and her husband are instilling the travel bug in their 4-year-old son, who loves planes and beach destinations.

Abby Samler is a senior market manager for Los Angeles and mother of three girls ages 9, 7 and 5. Her family looks forward to an action-packed travel schedule, and she treasures the memories their trips create.

Josh Winkler is a regional vice president for Orbitz Partner Marketing group and dad to a toddler and a newborn. Josh and his wife travel more now than they did before having kids. They love the family bonding they get on beach vacations in Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Alison Ulrich is an internal audit manager at Orbitz. She and her husband are parents to a 2-year-old son. They enjoy cruising, scuba diving, beach vacations, and traveling anywhere else a 2-year-old would like.

Frank Gruger works to improve the user experience of Orbitz.com. With the loving encouragement of his wife, his daughter saw the streets of London, Venice, Rome, and Tokyo, and swam in the Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and Sagami Bay -- all before her first birthday. Phew!

Monica is a full-time working mom to a rambunctious preschooler, Logan. She enjoys cooking and spending time with her husband and son exploring their Chicago northside neighborhood.

Mary Flynn is an Orlando native with 4 children, ages 21, 19 and 8-year-old twins. She also has two grandsons who are 19- and 6-months old. She travels all the time with some -- if not all -- the kids.

Dannelle Sibley is a full-time working mother and wife. With an 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, she likes to plan travel vacations that are fun as well as educational.

If her preschooler grows up and complains, "Mom, you never let me do anything," Orbitz editor Mary-Jo Lipman is going to remind him that his parents took him to Paris, Turks & Caicos, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco, Orlando, South Florida, Dallas, Maine and St. Louis within his first 2.5 years.

Chris Hill currently resides in Texas because it is too Cold up North. His family is self-proclaimed "Theme Park Junkies," including his wife, 6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter, who are always looking for the next adventure.

Vanessa Aleksic is a full-time working mother to 2 young boys. After work, you can find her singing children's songs out of tune with her eldest or crawling after her youngest. In the few miraculously calm moments, she tries to find time to read, scrapbook, and plan her next travel adventure.

Patrick O'Neil and his wife love creating opportunities for their girls, ages 7 and 9, to enjoy and appreciate the adventure of travel -- whether driving to Boston and New York, or flying to Miami and Paris.

Mark McCullough, father of 3 children under age 6, often reminisces about his former life as a raft guide and rock-climbing instructor. Now his outings are more subdued, like canoeing along the tidal rivers in Virginia's historic triangle of Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg.

John George is a full-time working dad to his 11-year-old son. After visiting every continent, save Antarctica, he was domesticated by his wife Jenny. Their family enjoys cruising, beach vacations and getaways to the Big Apple.

This MonthFamily-friendly spring break

By Mark McCullough, Alison Ulrich and Abby Samler: Mark's family goes mad for manatees, Allison weighs "cruise or all-inclusive resort," and Sam explores the kid-friendly side of Atlantis in the Bahamas.

Tips onFamily-friendly hotels

We asked the panelists to name their top spots for family-friendly spring break vacations, and here are some of their personal favorites:

  1. San Diego: An abundance of sunshine and activities, from the San Diego Zoo and Sea World to Legoland and the beaches.
  2. Family Cruises: Cruise ships are like floating all-inclusive resorts. Meals and on-board activities to please everyone and a low hassle factor. Look for "kids sail free" offers too.
  3. Miami: You can't go wrong with a Florida spring break vacation and Miami's South Beach is no exception. Kids can spend their days playing in the sand, body boarding or even learning to surf.
  4. Disney World in Orlando or Disneyland in Anaheim: Both are a good time guaranteed. Tip: Snag the "Pay for 3, Play for 5" deal that runs through March 15.
  5. Lauderdale by the Sea: Lauderdale by the Sea is a great place for a family beach vacation. Younger kids will enjoy playing on the beach, while older children can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving.
  6. Hawaii: Say aloha to one of the best Spring Break destinations in the US. Check out the nation's largest tropical reef aquarium at the Maui Ocean Center or take a family surf lesson at any of the beautiful beaches.
  7. Keystone: Want to ski, but don't want to deal with freezing temperatures? Spring skiing is a great option for a family spring break vacation. Plus many resorts have great ski schools for the kids.
  8. Washington DC: Hit the museums, check out the White House, or visit the animals at the zoo - all for free. The U.S. capital is a great place for a big city spring break getaway on a budget.
  9. Jamaica: Check out more than the beach in Jamaica. Kids who love reptiles will get a kick out of the Black River boat tour during which guides feed and interact with crocodiles.
  10. Cabo: If you think Spring Break in Los Cabos is just for college kids, think again. Find plent of family-oriented resorts and activities that allow you to take advantage of all Cabo has to offer without dealing with the crowds.

Five Family Favorites: San Francisco
Parks and places

Fisherman's Wharf - a San Francisco family favorite. Enjoy a hot chocolate at Ghirardelli Square, listen and be entertained by up and coming musicians and street performers at Pier 39. Catch the cable car for a tour of the city … San Francisco style.

Museum

Exploratorium - a very "hands on" science and arts museum appropriate for "kids" of all ages. Watch, learn and do; dissect a cow's eye, electrocute a pickle, or build a solar system.

Attractions

Alcatraz - take a boat ride across the San Francisco Bay to the former home of Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelley. Step into an actual prison cell; your children are sure to be amazed and the self-guided audio tour provides years of prison history.

Museum

California Academy of Sciences - located in beautiful Golden Gate Park, the museum (and the albino alligator) are a must see! It's a 4 for 1; an aquarium, planetarium, history museum and rainforest all under one roof.

Parks and places/Restaurants

Chinatown - the largest one outside of Asia! Enjoy a fast paced authentic Chinese meal at the famous House of Nanking. Later, enjoy browsing the small shops on the lantern lined streets for the specialty "kids can't live without" souvenirs.
